Biography
In 1918 he graduated from the Royal Naval Academy in the city of Marine, Ponteverde Province, Galicia. Having received an officer rank upon graduation, he received the baptism of fire in the Reef War of 1924-1926, which was waged by Spain and France against the so-called Reef Republic of the Berbers. With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he was hiding out of fear of the Republican police at the embassies of Mexico and France. In June 1937 he managed to reach the territory occupied by the rebel forces, was appointed commander of the headquarters of the fleet.
In 1940-1951 he was secretary of the government presidium, in 1951-1967 - minister-secretary in charge of all Spanish secret services. In the late 1950s, he supported the new economic course, associated with the country's greater openness to Europe; advocated economic modernization, but within the clear boundaries of Francoism, excluding any democratic and social liberalization of socio-political life.
In 1963 he became vice admiral, and in 1966 - admiral. From July 1967 he was deputy, in June-December 1973 he was chairman of the Spanish government and chairman of the National Movement. He received a position in accordance with the law (in the event of the death or incapacitation of Franco, the post of head of state will be transferred to the successor appointed by him - a member of the Spanish royal family who will become king of Spain (Prince Juan Carlos Bourbon was approved as Franco's successor in 1969); according to law 1972, the functions of head government and the chairman of the "National Movement" in this case will go to the deputy chairman of the government (in 1972 - Luis Carrero Blanco) [2] .
He was killed by ETA terrorists on December 20, 1973, while returning by car from the church. Terrorists, having rented an apartment in one of the central areas, dug a tunnel under the carriageway of the street, on which Blanco's car often drove, and laid explosives there. When the prime minister’s car crossed the mined section of the road, an explosion occurred that was so powerful that Carrero Blanco’s car was abandoned on the balcony of a neighboring monastery on the opposite side of the building and was not immediately found. One of the participants in the attack was Jose Miguel Benharan [3] .
The successor to Carrero Blanco at the head of the government - after eleven days of the premiership of Torcuato Fernandez-Miranda - was Carlos Arias Navarro .
