Dus Santos, Teotoniou

Born in Karangol , Minas Gerais , November 11, 1936, officially registered on January 11, 1937. From 1958 to 1961, Teotoniou studied at the Faculty of Economics of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, receiving a bachelor's degree in sociology, politics and public administration. He is actively involved in the activities of the student union, organizes a circle to study Marxism. This circle together with other Brazilian anti-Stalinist organizations in 1961 formed the left-wing anti-Stalinist organization " Workers' Policy ".

In 1963 he met with Andre Gunder Frank , at the seminars of which, with the participation of Rui Mauro Marini , Vani Bambirra and other Marxist researchers, the foundation of the theory of dependent development was laid. After the military coup of 1964, Dus Santos went into an illegal position, participating in the underground struggle of the "Labor Policy". In 1966, he was forced to leave Brazil and emigrate to Chile, where he headed the Center for Social and Economic Research at the University of Chile .

The Chilean military coup of 1973 forces Dus Santos for a second time to seek refuge - this time in Mexico. There he becomes a professor of economics at the postgraduate study department at the Department of Economics and Philosophy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico . In 1975, Dus Santos was appointed coordinator of doctoral studies in economics, and in 1978 - director of the graduate school of NAUM. During this period of his work, Teotoniou devotes much time to developing the theory of the world-system, which he considers as a higher stage in the development of the theory of dependent development. He also makes efforts to resume the work of the Center for Social and Economic Research, destroyed by Chilean repression. In 1979, he participated in the creation of the opposition Democratic Labor Party of Brazil , and after the 1980 amnesty he returned to his homeland.

In 1982, he participated as a candidate in the election of the governor of Minas Gerais, as well as in the election of a deputy of the federal district in 1986.

During the 1980s, Teotoniou became a consultant to the United Nations University (UNU) and UNESCO. In the 90s, Dus Santos became president of the Latin American Association of Sociologists (ALAS), a member of the executive board of the Latin American Association of Science and Technology Policy, a consultant to the Latin American Economic System (SELA) and director of the House of Economic Sciences of the University of Paris-1 . In 1985 he became a doctor of economics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and in 1986 - a professor. In 1988, he served as professor at the Federal University of Fluminense. From 1997 until his death, he was the head of the UN Global Economy and Sustainable Development University.

Teotoniou Dos Santos died on February 27, 2018 at the age of 81 due to pancreatic cancer.
