Sicilian fir - a species in critical danger , grows in the mountains of Nebrodi and Madonie in the north of the island, in an area of about 1.5 km² , although previously forests covered a significant area in the mountains. In the 1900s, the species was considered extinct , but live specimens were discovered in 1957 . Currently, about 30 trees are known, 23 - adults. [2] [3] Usually grows at an altitude of 1500-1900 m above sea level .
Sicilian fir - low or medium height evergreen coniferous tree (8-11 m , rarely up to 20 m), trunk diameter up to 40 cm (rarely up to 1 m). Crohn is widely oval or open.
Cones on average reach a length of 7-16 cm and a width of 3.5-4 cm.
Needles - 10-15 (less often up to 20) mm long and about 2 mm wide. [4] [5]
The species is close to white fir , sometimes it is distinguished as its subspecies Abies alba subsp. nebrodensis ( Lojac. ) Svoboda , 1964.
