Creation History

The play was written in early 1971 . The first option was created specifically for the Moscow Academic Theater. Vl. Mayakovsky , however, was not put on stage. One of the versions of the play ended with the suicide of Valentina.

First published in 1972 in the almanac " Siberia " after the death of the playwright.

Initially, Vampilov called the play “Valentine”, but the name had to be changed, since while the work was approved by censorship, the play “ M. Valentine and Valentine ”, written later, became widely known by M. M. Roshchin . The name was changed to “Red Summer - June, July, August ...”, but Vampilov included the play under the working title “Last Summer in Chulimsk” in his first one-volume edition, and after the death of the author it became final.

Although the play was adopted by the editorial board at the end of 1971, Ollit twice refused permission to print (in April 1972, referring to “ideological deficiency of the content”, and in July 1972, calling the play “artistically crude”). Only in August, after Vampilov’s funeral, permission was obtained. [one]

Story

The action takes place in the taiga district center.

The main character, Valentina, works in a local teahouse. She is in love with investigator Shamanov. He is “urban” and “would have gone far if he had not fooled himself”: he decided at all costs to achieve justice and condemn the son of a high-ranking official who shot down a man, but was defeated and literally fled to Chulimsk. He feels crushed by life and only dreams of retirement.

At first, Shamanov did not pay attention to Valentina, but he suddenly showed interest in her: at first he was trying to understand why she was repairing the front garden all the time, which the visitors of the tea house were breaking over and over, and later suddenly realizing that she reminded him of his first love - and it’s like awakens him to life: “I find this world anew, like a drunkard who comes out of a binge. Everything returns to me: evening, street, forest, - I was driving through the forest now, - grass, trees, smells - it seems to me that I have not heard them since childhood ... ”At first, Valentina Shamanov confessedly answers, however, having learned that the barmaid’s son Paul wants her, demands that he leave her alone. The love conflict is complicated by the intervention of the accountant Mechetkin, who, on the advice of Kashkina, who has views of Shamanov, wooes with Valentina and receives the approval of her father.

Pavel calls Valentina to dance, she refuses, but, having heard Paul quarrel with his mother (she literally kicks him out of the house), out of pity agrees to go with him. They come back late at night, Valentina says to her father that she was with Mechetkin and asks that neither Pavel nor Shamanov “mate to her”.

Characters

  • Valentina - Valentina Fedorovna Pomigalova, eighteen years old, she is of medium height, slim, pretty.
  • Shamans - Shamanov is thirty-two years old; he is slightly above average growth, lean. In everything he has - in the way he dresses, speaks, moves - sloppiness, connivance, unrequited negligence and distraction are observed. Sometimes, listening to the interlocutor, he, as if suddenly falling into a dream, lowers his head. From time to time, however, it suddenly finds revival, a short burst of energy, after which, however, it usually becomes especially apathetic.
  • Pashka - Pashka is twenty-four years old; he is visiting the mother of Anna Vasilyevna Khoroshikh in the village, wearing a bright red extravagant jacket, but also rude work shoes. He’s a big guy, clumsy. Look a bit sullen, says the bass. In general, the tendency to go ahead is in good agreement with his appearance.
  • Pomigalov - Valentina’s father, Fedor Ignatievich Pomigalov: “And where are your grooms? .. Well, where? Those that are spinning here are not suitors, I’ve been warning you for the hundredth time. God forbid, with whom I will see - from these ... I don’t see grooms. This is the first. One. And I got married. He came, in honor, in good. So what? And I respect. Your mother, deceased, I was fifteen years younger. And what? .. And look at the sisters. Well, they went for the young, and what happened? One now toils without a husband, the other - no one knows how. I forgot my dear father. And we need science. Kekha (Mechetkin), maybe not the first time the bridegroom is parsed, but ... The man is getting married, which means he needs to be treated. To ridicule him for a short while, and I believe that it is not necessary to laugh, but to think. He’s not so funny. He works honestly, does not drink, does not fight, and he has a house, and belongings, and he has money. (As if warning an objection.) Yes, Valentina Fedorovna, and money! Therefore, if a person has money, then he is no longer funny. So serious. Beggars are out of fashion now. Even the cities went: a wedding is needed, and a ring, and a passbook. So what? And I salute. ”
  • Dergachev
  • Mechetkin - Mechetkin pretended: his shirt turns white under a dark jacket. Imagining himself an extraordinary gentleman, sits down on the railing, takes out a white handkerchief, at first spectacularly waves himself at him, then blows his nose loudly at him.
  • Eremeev
  • Kashkina - Zinaida Pavlovna Kashkina
  • Good ones - Anna Vasilyevna Khoroshikh, mother of Pashka, barmaid: "My head is spinning. I closed the cash desk or left it like that - I don’t remember."
