His name translates as "Noble Defender."
After the death of his predecessor, St. Herfried , Altfried was made in 839 the third bishop of Munster . Like Herfried, he was a nephew of St. Ludger , the first bishop of Munster.
In the same year, he simultaneously became the fifth abbot of the Verdun monastery (now Verdun is part of the city of Essen ).
Saint Altfried is known for writing the first Life of Saint Ludger under the title “Vita sancti Liudgeri”. In addition, he completed work on the construction of a crypt in the Verdun monastery, where the relics of St. Ludger, and then St. Altfrid.
Annually the memory of St. Altfrid is celebrated by the Catholic Church on April 22, and the Orthodox on May 5 . The Archbishop of Berlin and Germany, Theophanes (Galinsky) ( ROC ), blessed the veneration of St. Altfried as a locally revered saint .
