Title

According to legend, the lake was named because of the church standing in the middle of the lake on the island. Such legends are associated with at least several lakes with similar names. However, in this case, local residents showed shards seen in the shallows in the middle of the lake as evidence. Archaeologists have found at this place traces of the presence of an ancient man - the remains of ceramics , stone arrowheads [8] .

Physico-geographical characteristics

Transfiguration Church on the elevated northwestern shore of the lake in St. Andrew's Settlements

Lake of glacial [1] [9] or karst [9] origin.

The lake is characterized by sloping, low shores. The northern and partly western shores are wooded and very boggy [1] [5] .

The lake is located among peat bogs and its water has a brownish color, which is explained by the presence in its composition of a significant amount of fulvic acids and humic acids. The lake’s water also contains relatively much chlorine, which is mainly associated with anthropogenic pollution by industrial discharges [1] .

Overgrowth less than 20%. Among aquatic vegetation, sedge, reeds, reeds, elodea, duckweed, and arrowheads are common. The lake is inhabited by pike, perch, crucian carp, roach, pike perch, bream, ide, tench (in the backside), carp, silver carp, common carp, grass carp, ruff, bleak, rotan and silver bream. Bottom fauna is represented by various types of shells, crayfish live in the lake. There is a muskrat and an otter [9] .

On the shore of the lake are the northern borders of the city of Shatura , the village of Kerva , the villages of Andreevsky Vyselki , Mitinskaya and Rybkhoz [5] [6] .

In total, about 30 watercourses flow into the Holy Lake. The lake is connected by channels to neighboring lakes: White , Murom and Black [1] ; together, the lake system is a reservoir-cooler of the Shaturskaya GRES [10] . In addition, the lake communicates in two ditches with the now very swampy Black Lake -Spasskoe [1] [5] .

On the territory of the lake there are so-called “islands on the shallows”, about which almost nothing is known. They are located on the banks of the Great Sands .

Value

The lake is rich in fish, being a popular fishing spot. From a tourist point of view, the lake is unattractive [1] . On the shore of the lake is the Holiday House "At the Holy Lake" .
