LADA Samara is a family of Soviet and Russian small class cars produced by the Volga Automobile Plant from December 17, 1984 to December 24, 2013. They became the first cars of the Volga Automobile Plant that were not connected by technical continuity with the Fiat 124 . At one time - the most popular domestic cars on the Russian market [1] .
Initially, in the domestic market, this line of cars was called "Sputnik", and the name Lada Samara was used only for export cars. The latter subsequently spread as βLada Samaraβ in Russia, and then became official for the family. Popularly, the family cars are known under the collective nickname " chisel " for the specific design of the front end.
In 1991-1993, the family was facelifted , during which it received a new front end design (βlong wingβ) and (part of the release) βhighβ instrument panel, similar to the sedan VAZ-21099 (1990), which had been mastered shortly before.
In 1997-2003, all models of the family were restyled , starting with a sedan and ending with a three-door hatchback . The cars received an updated front end with narrow modified headlamps, new body- colored bumpers , wide moldings on the sides, a spoiler on the tailgate, and a new interior.
Sputnik was not the first mass-produced domestic front-wheel drive car - this place belongs to the LuAZ-969V model ( 1967 - 1969 ). However, much of its design at the time was fundamentally new for the Soviet automobile industry: the transverse arrangement of the power unit, the MacPherson strut suspension system, a system of built-in self-diagnosis sensors, a diagonal separation circuit of the brake system circuits, the negative rolling arm in the front suspension, and finally, the use of modern at that time, materials and technologies, in particular, the widespread use of plastics and zinc coating of individual body elements. The technical solutions incorporated in the cars of this family became the basis for all VAZ models of this class right up to the development of the LADA Vesta platform.
Initially, cars were equipped with in-line four-cylinder eight - valve carburetor gasoline engines with a working volume of 1300, later - 1100 and 1500 cmΒ³. Since 1994, four-cylinder gasoline engines with distributed fuel injection began to be installed on a part of the production, and after 2005 all cars of the family were equipped with injection engines.
In December 2012, the production of VAZ-2115 sedans was stopped [2] , in June 2013 the production of three-door VAZ-2113 hatchbacks [3] ceased, and in December 2013 the production of five-door VAZ-2114 hatchbacks [4] . On December 24, 2013, the last Lada Samara 2114 left the assembly line (with a 1.8-liter 16-valve engine and a five-speed manual gearbox in Golden Brown color.) [5] .

Background
In the USSR, front-wheel drive for a long time was generally evaluated negatively [6] . It was believed that front-wheel drive vehicles justify themselves only in conditions of good roads and relatively mild climates, and are unsuitable for use in winter conditions, on dirt roads and, especially, off-road due to low traction and coupling qualities, which additionally deteriorate when loading a car with passengers and baggage, movement on the rise and on slippery surfaces, in particular - in ice. Thus, according to the data of the late forties, with a snowy or slippery road, a car with front-wheel drive can overcome the rise, 1.5β2 times smaller than rear-wheel drive [7] . These shortcomings were exacerbated by the low power of small engines of those years, and often by the use of unsuccessful layout schemes in world practice, which caused insufficient loading of the front drive axle.
As long as the small engines remained relatively low-power (35-50 hp), there was a risk that under certain conditions during operation of the front-wheel drive car there may be problems with overcoming icy sections of the road, steep climbs, dirt roads and off-road sections, which did not meet the requirement for the maximum possible universality that was presented to Soviet passenger cars in those years - the talk of releasing several models of the same class, created for specific operating conditions tion, for a long time could not go for economic reasons. The advantages of front-wheel drive in terms of stability and handling in those years were relatively insignificant due to the low speeds of vehicles .
Therefore, for the road conditions of the USSR, it was considered the most suitable cars of the classic layout, as the most universal, in any conditions providing acceptable traction and coupling qualities, additionally increasing when starting off, moving on lifting and loading the car, and in the class of small cars - rear-engine . It was these considerations that played a role in choosing the prototype of the first domestic car of a particularly small class, the Zaporozhets ZAZ-965 , which became the Italian Fiat 600 with a rear power unit. The choice of the Italian Fiat 124 as a prototype for a mass domestic subcompact with a βclassicβ layout and, on the whole, a rather conservative design is explained in approximately the same way.
Meanwhile, by the mid-1960s, the power of serial small-displacement engines began to grow rapidly, reaching 70β80 hp. - such a power reserve provided traction and coupling qualities acceptable for normal operation in almost any road conditions. By this time, the design of the front-wheel drive had already been well developed by Western European car manufacturers, so at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, interest in front-wheel drive structures around the world, including the USSR, increased sharply. Front-wheel prototypes during this period were worked at by us, at the Zaporizhzhya plant , in Izhevsk . Their variants of the front-wheel drive car were also developed at the just-launched production of the Zhiguli Volga Plant. These were the VAZ-E1101 Cheburashka (1972) and the VAZ-3E1101 Ladoga, the latter later became the starting point of work on the future Tavria . These development work allowed both to identify the positive qualities of the front-wheel drive layout, and in general terms to outline the range of problems and difficulties that are possible when mastering a car built on it in mass production. The mass production of Zhiguli allowed to saturate the domestic market of cars to a certain extent, which, coupled with a significant improvement in the economic situation in the country due to the sharp increase in oil prices in the first half of the decade, made it possible to raise the question of their expansion assortment. Instead of a single standard design with maximum versatility, there was a real opportunity to produce simultaneously several technologically more specialized models not connected to each other, designed to operate under different conditions and satisfy various demand categories (such a situation arose in those years and, in fact, along with more gentle "Zhiguli" continued production of old models belonging to the same class, but more adapted to the conditions of the countryside, "Muscovites" and "Izhi" nd).
Thus, conditions arose for the appearance in the type of domestic "cars" designed to operate primarily in urban and well-maintained interurban roads of a front-wheel drive car, which has a number of advantages in terms of compactness, low cost of production, stability and controllability. In fact, we managed to move towards the implementation of these plans towards the end of the 1970s, when it became possible to economically justify a change in the model range of the Volga Automobile Plant, which was entrusted with the role of the flagship in the development of a new layout scheme for the country's automotive industry.
Development
Initial period
From the very beginning, the prevailing opinion was that the successful development of a modern and competitive automobile car on the international market of the Soviet automobile industry would require a large foreign partner, as whose engineering team of the flagship of the then Soviet automobile industry - AvtoVAZ software - would definitely like to see Fiat The experience of cooperation with which was evaluated very positively.
Meanwhile, Fiat representatives refused to cooperate with VAZ to create a modern model of front-wheel drive car, which could potentially compete with its own products in the Western European market. As an alternative, it was proposed to jointly develop a modernized version of the existing rear-wheel drive model with the replacement of the body with a more modern one, but while maintaining the aggregate base. A similar project - Polonaise - Fiat in those years implemented in Poland on Fiat 125p units. The calculation of the Italians was clear - a machine created on a deliberately outdated aggregate base, thanks to its modern design, would be perceived positively on the domestic market of the USSR and could be successfully exported to third world countries, to a limited extent - even to developed countries, but it did not constitute a significant threat for Fiatβs own interests.
However, after a thorough study of trends in the global automobile market and in the expectation of gradually displacing the existing model from the conveyor without exceeding the optimal service life of the production equipment at VAZ, it was decided to create a fundamentally new front-wheel drive car.
Prototypes of such cars were already created at VAZ in the early 1970s, however, the path from prototype to mass production was long and difficult, and the Volzhsky plant team had no experience in creating cars from scratch. Therefore, when making a decision, both self-development options and the purchase of a foreign model with ready-made technology were considered. The first option was fraught with great risk, and the second could potentially make the car planned for production obsolete by the time production began, as had already happened with the VAZ-2101 . As a result, a compromise decision was made: the development of the car was to be carried out in Togliatti, but at the stage of fine-tuning and putting into production two foreign companies were to be involved as consultants in design and technology, and it was planned to acquire licenses for individual units and master their production.
The West German company Porsche was involved as a design consultant - this was due, firstly, to the wide popularity of this company, the engineering department of which had already quite widely practiced custom-made car development for third-party manufacturers, and secondly, that Porsche itself produced cars of a completely different class, and in the face of future VAZ products, I did not see any competitors for myself. As a technology consultant, as an alternative to the joint development of the car, Fiat proposed its subsidiary UTS, which was engaged in technological developments, including for third-party customers.
Design
In May 1977, the development of the layout scheme of a promising three-door hatchback was started, it was carried out by designer A. Moskalyuk. The design was developed by V. Pashko and V. Kryazhev under the leadership of M. Demidovtsev. Since the summer of that year, V. Guba had been developing the interior space of the salon , having previously undergone an internship in West Germany at Porsche. During the development, a landing layout was used to clarify the landing elements and ergonomics.
The technical task for the car was drawn up in the fall of 1977, after which the procedure for its development and approval began. In parallel, the development of documentation for prototypes and preparation for their manufacture was in progress.
Since mid-1978, the production of units for prototypes was carried out under the leadership of the chief designer Y. Nepomnyashchy. The first prototype was assembled on December 31, 1978. On the second of January of the following year, the defects found in the wiring were eliminated, and the car was first tested on the go. Subsequently, a number of running prototypes of the βfirst seriesβ were made. The whole of 1979 was spent on their testing and preparing documentation for the second series of prototypes. The prototypes of the βsecond seriesβ were demonstrated in Moscow to members of the government and members of the Central Committee of the CPSU.
As the vehicles, detailed information about which the plant staff had when designing the VAZ-2108, all models of the VAZ itself are called, including the Niva , Volkswagen Golf model of 1974, to a lesser extent - Fiat Ritmo . In addition, the VAZ had previously obtained samples of the obsolete Fiat 127 and Fiat 128 .
Lack of information in the absence of experience prevented the immediate selection of optimal solutions. For example, the βfirst seriesβ of prototypes 2108 had short straight side members that βrestedβ on the front panel (the partition between the engine compartment and the passenger compartment ). The second series of prototypes already had more βfallingβ spars, which came under the carβs bottom and generally repeated the decision made on the Fiat Ritmo, in terms of body rigidity and passive safety. But this option was far from final.
Debugging
At the debugging stage, foreign partners were directly connected.
In January 1980, a contract was signed with Porsche, in the summer of that year - with UTS. Work was carried out simultaneously in Togliatti , Stuttgart and Turin , but all key decisions were made in Togliatti. The contract provided for the joint development of a three-door hatchback with a 1.3-liter engine (Gamma project - the future VAZ-2108); the remaining models, with other body options and engines of 1.1 and 1.5 liters, VAZ had to develop independently. The design was also completely left to the discretion of VAZ; foreign partners did not participate in its development. On the Porsche side, the project manager was Mr. Rainer Term, the head of the body department of the company, and on the VAZ side, Y. Nepomnyashchy.
Despite a number of problems caused by the difference in engineering schools, language, and other reasons, the development was completed in three years, which was assessed as βa good paceβ. Participation in the project of foreign partners was extremely fruitful.
On April 17, 1980, the front-wheel drive carrier of units based on the VAZ-21011 body was delivered to the company and the documentation for the promising Gamma hatchback was transferred. In the autumn of that year, Porsche began to receive suggestions for improving the design of the car. It was in accordance with them that the S-shaped front spars appeared on it, βleavingβ the floor thresholds (similar to the latest Opel Kadett D at that time), the steering mechanism with central rods, and a modified transmission control scheme.
At the same time, I was searching for Western companies to purchase licenses for the production of individual components - in particular, a radiator, a carburetor (SOLEX), power windows, door locks, front suspension struts (Wayassauto), clutch (Automotiv Prodax), rack and pinion steering gear and transmission synchronizers (Zahnradfabrik - ZF, Germany), SHRUS (Hardy Spicer, England), vacuum booster and disc brakes (Lucas, England), rear suspension beams (Volkswagen), and others. Mastering their licensed production in the USSR required the processing of drawings, translation of documentation, a selection of domestic analogues of materials, and many other operations. A license and equipment for the production of tubeless radial tire with steel cord dimension 165 / 70R13, mounted at the Nizhnekamsk tire factory, were also purchased. The VAZ main brake cylinder of an increased diameter (20.64 mm), the pressure regulator of the rear brakes, and the rear drum brakes with a wheel hub were fully developed.

VAZ-2115 is a restyled model of the VAZ-21099 .
