Literary work [edit | Edit]
The writer Caroline von Wolzogen came out especially thanks to two works: the novel Agnes von Lilien , which appeared in 1796/97 in Schiller’s journal “ Die Horen” and published in 1830 a biography of Schiller's life. It consists of family memories, his own letters and news about his friend Körner .
The novel “ Agnes Lily” is the story of a sentimental and all-beautiful stupid girl with an open mind, who in the real world feels estranged, misunderstood and attracted to an ideal man who unites all virtues. The novel is written in first-person form, like a fictional autobiography, and not with excellent knowledge of an adult woman looking back at her life, but from the point of view of a naive and “natural” young woman and has a number of structural flaws and narrative inconsistencies. But the mentality and canon of values and values that characterize the novel, met with the spirit of the time at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries. In 1802, the novel also appeared in a French translation. Caroline von Wolzogen (Filip Friedrich von Hatch's paintings from about 1800) In modern readership, as well as in literary criticism, anonymous, published and firmly read in Germany many novels of sentimental letters, inspired by the novel of Samuel Richardson, mostly approved. As a template for the male protagonist in Agnes Lily , which perfectly combines all the virtues, Sir Grandison served from Richardson's epistolary novel, The Story of Sir Charles Grandison . Friedrich Schlegel even suggested Goethe as an author, because the novel reveals hints of the apprenticeship of William Meister . Others attribute the novel to Friedrich Schiller. With romance, the novel was met with deviation, and in the end it was forgotten, because the subject and the transferred mentality are very limited in time. Frustrated, Caroline von Volzogen wrote after motionless stories and novels, one of which ( Cordelia ) was published in 1840, but they met with a relatively small response.
Despite occasional new editions, Agnes von Lilien was largely forgotten and found Schiller's limited interest again in 2005, but is often a novel, often in perfect form - with its weaknesses - the intellectual spirit of the time period of about 1800, his (poetic) enthusiasm and sensitivity and his enthusiasm for psychological issues (“soul experience”).
For the “author” Karolina Volzogen, it’s possible with Joch Goltz, “What traces of the Karolinsky’s life in literary texts and life testimonies, however, have significant value for the unhindered view of classical culture and its history”. [3]
