Pepo ( Pepino ; Italian. Pepo ; 11th century) - predecessor of Irnerius (founder of the school of glossators ). Information about the life of Pepo is extremely stingy. It is only known that even before Irnery in Bologna there were some lawyers (legum doctores) who were educated in the schools of Ravenna or Pavia and taught law in their hometown. Odofred tells, indeed, about a certain Pepo, who seemed to be such a teacher of law. The story of Odofred is confirmed by some other data: for example, in one court record relating to 1076, Pepo is mentioned as a person who participated in the examination of the case, from which it can be concluded that Pepo at that time was known as a learned and respected lawyer.
In later documents, the name Pepo is mentioned in a document by lawyer Azo. In other documents, the name Pepo is mentioned in connection with the court proceedings at the court of Henry IV. In this process, we were talking about the murder of one servo (i.e. not free). Pepo participated in it as an expert consultant who applied Roman legal formulas.
In other sources, the Moralia Regum, which was written in France, proceeds from the fact that Pepo was not a nullius nominis lawyer, but was a respected master. In any case, the science of Pepo was the exact answer, in connection with the remoteness of the historical era and the minimal number of sources.
However, based on his work in Codicis Justiniani et Institutionum baiulus, Pepo can be seen as the forerunner of the later established Glossary School in Bologna.
