Science Park AREA ( Italian. L'AREA Science Park ) in Trieste consists of two adjacent and developing campuses, located near the exit of the highway connecting Venice with Austria and Slovenia . The park covers an area of 50 hectares and has the opportunity to expand its territory to 150 hectares, in a place with beautiful nature on the Karst plateau.
The AREA Science Park was founded in 1982 with the goal of providing a link between the business community and numerous highly developed international academic institutions in Trieste. Now it is the most important diversified science park in Italy and one of the most advanced in Europe .
The park has about 23,000 m² of laboratory space, equipped with specialized equipment, experimental and protective equipment in addition to offices and services (conference center, meeting rooms, training laboratories, cafes , etc.). An additional area of 1500 m² is now available for new activities. The following services are also available: information and computers , legal , financial and accounting advice, engineering and plant technology, occupational health and safety care, marketing and advertising, information and assistance in European Union programs.
It stimulates small and medium-sized companies entering into research contracts with the science park AREA. They can be stimulated directly (a contribution to cover the cost, contribution to the share capital or targeted payments) or in other forms of support (purchase of work tools, partnership, assistance and advice). Research laboratories, whose goal is to promote industry in technologically advanced sectors with significant and highly skilled workforce, planning to settle in the science park AREA, can also get access to funding provided by the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia .
Intensively trained graduates of schools and universities lead in work, research and production structures in or outside the science park. The partnership has been awarded by the consortium the privilege to teach at AREA institutions, centers and companies. Under the programs included in the European Commission Objective 2 , the Consortium oversees the training of graduates of institutions in the innovation sector, transferring to create strong links between the world of research and small and medium-sized businesses.
The science park currently has 38 departments, divided into the following sectors:
- highly specialized research and training centers;
- third-party development, service, and research centers;
- new companies arising from the availability of specialized services, know-how and services supported by AREA;
- special project of the Laboratory ELETTRA .
