Station History
The station was opened on December 24, 1868 by the Metropolitan District Railways (MDR) as part of the first line from South Kenningston. The Metropolitan District Railway connected the Metropolitan Railway (MR) with South Kenningston, although the two companies were competitors, each operating its own trains along the lines of the other within the so-called inner ring. Westminster Bridge was the terminal station in the east of the MDR until the Blackfriars station opened on May 30, 1870.
On February 1, 1872, the MDR opened a branch north of Earls Curt , which connected it along West London Extension Joint Railway with Edison Road. Since then, the outer ring has consisted of paths belonging to the MDR. From August 1, 1872, the operation of the middle ring began, which passed through Westminster from Murgate along the MR routes to the north of the inner ring. On June 30, 1900, the middle ring was split between Yols Curt and Manson House . In 1907, the station got its modern name in order to distinguish it from the Westminster Bridge Road station on the Bakerloo line . On December 31, 1908, the outer ring was also opened.
The station’s design has won several awards: the Civic Trust charity foundation award in 2000 and 2002, the Royal Commission of Fine Arts Millennium Building of the Year award, and the Royal Institute of British Architects architecture award in 2001. [2] In 2001, the project was also on the short list of the Stirling Prize . [3]
