History

It was built in the period from 1860 to 1872 by the efforts of the Palestinian Committee to accommodate the needs of Russian Orthodox pilgrims in the Holy Land . As of 1872, it included: Trinity Cathedral , the building of the Russian Spiritual Mission , the Elizabethan and Mariinsky courtyards, the building of the Russian Hospital and the Russian Imperial Consulate in Jerusalem. In 1889, the Elizabethan and Mariinsky Compound , the Russian Hospital were transferred to the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society , which also expands the Russian Compound with its independent projects: in 1889, the construction of the New (Sergievsky Compound) and in 1905 the construction of the Nikolaev Compound .

In 1964, all the buildings of the Russian Compound, with the exception of Holy Trinity Cathedral , the building of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission and the St. Sergius Compound , were sold by the Soviet government to the state of Israel under the so-called “Orange Deal” . The legality of the transaction remains controversial [1] . Negotiations are underway to return the buildings of the Russian Compound of Russia [2] .

In 2008, the Sergievsky Compound , which was occupied by the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and the local conservation society, was returned to Russia and transferred to the Russian government. Finally released from tenants in August 2012 [3] .
