Oliver Walcott ( born Oliver Wolcott ; January 11, 1760 , Lichfield - June 1, 1833 , New York ) - American statesman, 2nd US Treasury , 9th Governor of Connecticut . [1] .

Youth and Education
Born into the family of Sir Oliver Walcott and Laura Collins Walcott. He graduated from Yale University in 1778 , later he studied law at Lichfield Law School and in 1781 was admitted to the bar .
The path to the chair of the US Treasury Secretary
In 1784 he was appointed Commissioner as an intermediary between the United States and the state of Connecticut . After that, he served as Connecticut State Comptroller until 1790 , then was appointed Treasury Inspector in 1791 . After the resignation of Alexander Hamilton was appointed by George Washington his successor as US Secretary of the Treasury in 1795 .
In 1799, when he was already the US Treasury Secretary, he designed the US customs flag.
Resignation
He retired in 1800 because of unpopularity and the campaign against him in the press, in which, by the way, he was falsely accused of setting fire to the state department building.
Connecticut governor
From 1803 to 1815 he was engaged in private business in New York . Later returned to Lichfield. In 1817 he was elected governor as a candidate from the Party of Tolerance , continuing the work of his father and grandfather, remaining in this position for ten years. His tenure is characterized by economic growth and moderate politics in Connecticut . In addition, he was chairman of the assembly that created the new state constitution in 1818 , changing the provisions of the old “Charter” [2] of 1662 .
Death
Oliver Walcott died in New York and was interred in the East Cemetery in Lichfield. Walcott was the last living member of the Washington Cabinet .
