Biography
Ingham was born in New Hope , Pennsylvania , to a peasant family [1] . He received only elementary education, from his youth he worked in a paper mill. After the death of his father in 1798, he went to New Jersey to earn money. Returning, in his hometown, Samuel founded his own factory.
Ingam began his political career in 1806 with his election as a deputy to the House of Representatives from the state of Pennsylvania [1] . This post he held until 1818. From October 1819 to December 1820, Ingem served as secretary of the state government of Pennsylvania. In 1822, Samuel Ingem was appointed as the representative of the sixth electoral district of the state of Pennsylvania. In 1829, the politician stops the activities of the Democratic-Republican Party and joins the Democrats .
From 1813 to 1815, Ingem was appointed the first chairman of the pension and compensation committee, and from 1815 to 1818 and from 1825 to 1829 the chairman of the Postal Committee [2] .
On March 6, 1829, President Andrew Jackson appointed Samuel Ingem to the post of US Treasury Secretary . After retirement, he returned to the production of paper, and also participated in the development of coal deposits [1] .
Ingem died on June 5, 1860 in Trenton , New Jersey . He was buried in a Presbyterian cemetery in Salisbury, Pennsylvania.
