At the beginning of the 20th century, the " Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron " described this island in its pages [1] :
| Antiparos - in ancient times Oliaros (homeland of Phidias and Praxiteles) - one of the Greek. The Cycladic Islands, lies southwest of Paros, from which it is separated by a narrow channel (about 4 km wide), barely passable for significant vessels, and together with it belongs to the Diocese of Naxos. Its area is 36 square meters. km, and in the only, lying almost in the middle of the island, the town of Castro is listed up to 600 g. There is little water on the island, however, its eastern and western parts are quite fertile and are occupied by vineyards and arable lands; there are also some meadows here, so the inhabitants of Paros, rich in marble, but poor in vegetation, send their herds of goats and sheep here to pasture. The same part of the island, which lies more south, is very mountainous. In the center of this mountainous area, a little closer to the middle of the island, there is a cave filled with beautiful figures from stalactites and stalagmites (droppers), which in ancient times attracted travelers, although none of the ancient writers mention it. Access to this cave is very difficult. A gallery with natural arches leads into a narrow and low passage, from the end of which you need to go down deep on the ropes. After the second even longer descent, which you can already glide along, another gallery opens, so high that its ceiling is barely visible. From there, a narrow passage leads to a new descent, on which stairs are resorted to, and after repeated transitions of the same kind, you can finally enter the main cave, which is 95 meters long, 30 meters wide and 25 meters deep. On the southwestern coast of the island there is a convenient harbor, protected by the rocky island Despotiko lying in front of it (ancient Prezint). In 1872, rich lead ores were discovered in Africa. |
