General Description
Outwardly similar to mice, rodents differ from them by elongated hind limbs, and, as a rule, by the presence of four pairs of molars in each jaw. All limbs are 5-fingered, with developed claws, but the first finger on the forelimbs is rudimentary and equipped with a flat nail. The tail is much longer than the body - 6.5-16 cm, covered with horny scales and sparse hairs, used as a balancer. At the Chinese mouse ( Eozapus setchuanus ) you can see the characteristic sign Y on the belly.
Distribution
Representatives of the family are common in North America and China. In North America, these rodents inhabit the forest, forest-steppe and steppe zones.
Lifestyle
These are solitary animals, leading predominantly nocturnal lifestyles . The day is spent in holes that are dug up by themselves, or occupied by holes of other rodents; also settle in cracks under stones, under fallen tree trunks. They feed on various plant foods, as well as small invertebrates.
