Sinope (satellite)

Sinope [4] ( dr. Greek. Σινώπη ) is an irregular natural satellite of Jupiter with retrograde motion. It was discovered in July 1914 by the American astronomer Seth Barnes Nicholson at the Lick Observatory [5] . Named after the nymph Sinope from ancient Greek mythology.

The satellite got its name in 1975 [6] , before that only the designation Jupiter IX was used . In the period from 1955 to 1975, the satellite was sometimes called " Hades " [7] .

Sinope was the outermost known satellite of Jupiter until the discovery in 1999 and 2000 of 12 satellites of the planet, two of which can be further from Sinope [4] .
