Biography
Pierre Giorgio (Peter - Yuri) Frassati was born into a rich, bourgeois family, which belonged to the liberal milieu of Italian society. His mother, Adelaide Ametis, was a famous artist, and his father, Alfredo Frassati, was the founder and owner of the newspaper La Stampa , Senator of the Kingdom of Italy and the Italian ambassador to Germany .
As a young man, Pierre Giorgio, while studying at the university, led an active social and spiritual life, took part in numerous charitable, political and spiritual organizations. Belonged to the Catholic movements “Apostolic Prayer”, “St. Vincent de Paul ”, University Federation of Italian Catholic Students. He studied at the engineering department of the Polytechnic University of Turin.
May 28, 1922 entered the third order of the Dominicans , adopting the name Jerome.
Since the beginning of 1920, when turmoil broke out in Turin, he accompanied a Dominican monk as a bodyguard to the red areas of Turin.
During Italian fascism, he opposed the authorities, actively professing his anti-fascist views. In 1921, he proposed at the national congress of the Federation of University Catholic Youth to create an organization that would oppose the fascist government.
Pierre Giorgio, through his political activity, brought to the life of the Catholic Church the understanding that it is necessary to be guided by faith in all spheres of human activity without any restrictions, including in the political and party life of society.
He died at the age of 24 from polio , having become infected, caring for a poor patient.
Memorial Day of Blessed Pierre Giorgio Frassati is celebrated on July 4.
Beatification
Beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 20, 1990.
