Six-point figure skating rating system

Grades for a fictional program set in accordance with a six-point grading system.

A six-point rating system in figure skating existed until 2005 , when it was officially replaced by the New Judicial System (before that, in the 2002-2003 season, the new system was tested at various competitions ) [1] . This system was used to assess the skill of skaters in the execution of programs: 0.0 - “not completed”, 6.0 - “perfectly” [2] , and the technical component and artistry were evaluated separately.

In modern figure skating, there are two uses for the six-point system:

  • In "friendly" competitions of a low level: firstly, it is clear to everyone; secondly, it is easy to adjust to the real level of riding participants.
  • In competitions in obligatory figures - since those left the “official” skating even before the transition to the New System.

In other sports ( professional figure skating , roller skating , diving ), the rating system is ten-point. The choice of just a six-point assessment was dictated by the fact that each of the mandatory figures consisted of six lines, three on each leg.

The essence of the system

Each of the judges makes two assessments: in the short program for the required elements ( presentation elements ) and artistry ( presentation ), in the arbitrary - for the technical performance ( technical merit ) and artistry on this scale [3] :

  • 0,0-0,9 - not completed
  • 1.0-1.9 - very bad
  • 2.0-2.9 - bad
  • 3.0-3.9 - mediocre
  • 4.0-4.9 - good
  • 5.0-5.9 - very good
  • 6.0 - impeccably

A rating of 6.0 out of context does not mean anything, but judges do not “scatter” such assessments, but give only for outstanding achievements of their time. 6.0 for technical performance was extremely rare [4] . The Torville - Dean dance couple at the Olympics 84 managed to get all nine 6.0 ratings for artistry. Tonya Harding , at the 1991 Skate America tournament, was awarded two 6.0 ratings for her technique: in particular, for her successful triple axel (Tonya became the second woman in the world to complete this jump). Of particular difficulty is Alexei Mishin in the book “Figure Skating”, represented by the rating of the first participant, which was previously discussed by the judges and set in accordance with the level and scale of the competition [2] .

Figure Skater A is higher than Figure Skater B if most judges put it higher in the total score. Draws in the short program allow in the direction of the mark for the required elements ( 5.9 + 5.7> 5.8 + 5.8 ), in the arbitrary program - in the direction of the mark for artistry ( 5.9 + 5.7 <5.8+ 5.8 ). If you still cannot determine who is better, add up the points given by all the judges. Short and random program rankings are combined, while an arbitrary program has more weight.

The number of judges is always odd (at least five, usually nine), this reduces the likelihood of a tie.

History

A six-point grading system was introduced in 1901 by the International Skating Union (ISU). The principle of "majority" was approved when calculating the final results: only if there was no "absolute majority", the total score should be calculated (as in the case of division of seats) [5] .

After a scandal at the 2002 Olympics, the ISU Congress decided to replace this rating system [6] [7] .
