Until 1982, the avenue was called Kiev highway [1] , after which it became known as the avenue of Heroes of Stalingrad.
On February 19, 2016, when preparing the Decision “On renaming the objects of urban toponymy”, the issue of renaming the Heroes of Stalingrad Avenue was also decided, however, the commission then decided not to rename the avenue, since this avenue, according to the mayor of Alexander Senkevich, did not bear the name I. V. Stalin , and bore the group name of those heroes who died during the Battle of Stalingrad (the famous battle in which approximately 500 thousand people were killed) [2] , but already in May 2016 supporters of decommunization relying on the Law of Ukraine “On condemning the communist and national-socialist totalitarian regimes and prohibiting the propaganda of their symbolism” nevertheless made a decision to rename the Heroes of Stalingrad Avenue to the Heroes of Ukraine Avenue [3] .
