Steptronic - the name of the type of automatic transmission with manual gear shift, developed and used by BMW (directly produced by ZF ).
Basic Information
In a Steptronic gearbox, the lever moves forward and backward in two parallel sectors. In the right sector, Steptronic, unlike a simple automatic transmission, does not have the positions “1”, “2” and “3” restricting gear shifting. There are four positions P (parking, parking), R (reverse), N (neutral) and D (drive, movement). In this sector, there is also a position “M / S” (Manual / Sport). This position activates the “sports” automatic transmission shift mode. In this mode, the automatic transmission will hold the gear until the maximum engine speed is reached and only after reaching increase the gear.
As soon as the gearshift lever is in the M / S position, it “turns” into a joystick. If you pull it down, then the highest gear will be engaged, and the joystick will return to its original middle position; if you push up - downshift will engage. Thus, the essence of the Steptronic system in fast gear shifting, comparable to a conventional manual transmission.
