Currently, this species is considered synonymous with Juniperus rigida var. conferta (Parl.) Patschke [1] .
Content
DistributionIn vivo grows on Sakhalin and in Japan. It occurs on the coast, on loose sands forms dense thickets.
DescriptionCreeping, creeping shrub , usually up to 2 m in height. The branches are red-brown, the ends of the branches are straight. Cones are rounded, 8-12 mm thick, dark blue. The needles are gray-green 10-15 mm long, 1 mm wide, with prickly ends. The wood of the tree is resistant to decay.
In CultureIntroduced into the culture in 1915. It is considered difficult to grow species. In the North-West of Russia it is of interest as a collection plant. Photophilous, drought tolerant , salt tolerant. It is recommended to plant on humus-poor sandy soils. In winter, winters under the protection of high snow cover. Poorly transplanted. Used for rock gardens and small gardens. It forms a thick, spiky and bright light green carpet, effectively looking against the background of bluish, gray and dark green conifers. Female specimens are especially decorative [2] .
Varieties- ' Blue Lagoon' . In 1976, Dr. John L. Crich and gardener Sylvester G. discovered this plant in one of the arboretums of Japan (Saitama-Ken). Cuttings of this plant were brought to the US National Arboretum . After nine years of evaluation in the arboretum's collection, the variety was given the name 'Blue Lagoon'. Launched in 1992. Groundcover, male, creeping form. Height is about 15 cm. Annual growth is 15-25 cm. The summer color of the needles is bluish-green, in winter with a plum hue. Zones of frost resistance : 6-8 [3] [4] .
- ' Blue Pacific' ('Blue Shore'), synonymous with Juniperus conferta 'Torulosa'. Ground cover, creeping form. Height about 30 cm, width about 200 cm. The needles are awl-shaped, blue-green, prickly. Drought tolerant. Zones of frost resistance: 5-9 [4] [5] .

- ' Emerald Sea' . Japan ( Honshu ). Ground cover, creeping form. Height is about 30 cm, width is about 350 cm. The needles are green [4] [6] .
- ' Emerald Ruffles' . Ground cover, creeping form. Height about 30-40 cm, width about 250 cm. The needles are awl-shaped, bright green [4] [7] .
- ' Horrid Mat' . Ground cover, creeping form. Height is about 30-40 cm, width is about 250 cm. The needles are awl-shaped [4] [8] .
- ' Iron Age' ™ is a synonym for 'Irozam' [4] .

- ' Schlager' . Sometimes implemented under the name Juniperus communis 'Schlager'. Ground cover, creeping form. Height about 30-40 cm, width about 250 cm. The needles are awl-shaped, green. On the inner side of the sheet is a wide silver strip [4] .
- ' Silver Mist' . Height is about 30-40 cm, width is about 120 cm. The needles are awl-shaped, distinctly silver. Frost-resistance zones: 6-9 [4] [9] [10] .
