In 1972, the sci-fi novel “When HARLEY turned one year old” [2] , nominated for the Hugo, Nebulla, and Locus awards, followed. In it, for almost the first time, the principle of the operation of worm - like programs was described. In 1988, the novel was revised and reprinted under the title “When HARLEY turned one year old (Version 2.0).”

Then came two notable novels: “Dubbed” ( The Man Who Folded Himself , 1973) and “Moon Star Odyssey” ( Eng. Moonstar Odyssey , 1977), in which Herrold, externally following classical models, canonized by the authors "Golden ( Campbell ) Century", violates the unshakable taboo of early science fiction : sex [3] . In the first novel, the protagonist, propagated, enters into a loving relationship with himself, while the action of the second novel takes place on a planet inhabited by androgynous people who are not separated by gender. The novel Dubbed was nominated for the Hugo, Nebulla, Locus, and Jupiter Prizes.

In 1970, Gerrold met the famous science fiction Robert Heinlein , which influenced the development of his work. In the best traditions of Heinlein's "Star Landing," a series was written about the war of the American National Guards with an alien monster: "The Case for Real Men" ( Eng. A Matter for Men , 1983) [4] , "Curse Day" ( Eng. A Day for Damnation , 1984), The Rage of Vengeance ( A Rage for Revenge , 1989), and The Time of Slaughter ( A Season for Slaughter , 1992). All novels are part of the War Against the Chtorr cycle . Three novels from the cycle (A Method For Madness, A Time For Treason, and A Case For Courage) are not finished yet. Fragments of the upcoming novel “A Time For Treason” were published in the story “It Needs Salt” (2007).

Within the framework of the Star Trek project, Gerrold wrote both for the original series (“ The Problem with Tribbles ”, 1967) and for the sequels (“Encounter at the Far Frontier” ( Encounter at Farpoint , 1987). About his work together with Gene Roddenbury and other creators of the series, Herrold recalls in the books “ The World of Star Trek ” (1973) and “On Board the Enterprise” ( English Boarding the Enterprise: Transporters, Tribbles, and the Vulcan Death Grip in Gene Rodenberry's Star Trek , 2006; co-authored by Robert Sawyer ).

In 1985, Gerrold, co-authored with Barry Longyear, wrote the eponymous novel-novelization of the script of the popular film “My Enemy” [5] .

David Herrold has several cycles. The Trackers dilogy, which includes the novels “Under the Eye of God” (1993; excerpts from the novel were published in a separate short story “Looking Forward” in the same year) and “A Covenant of Justice” (1994).

The story “My son is a Martian” ( Eng. The Martian Child , 1994), which received several literary prizes at once, served as the basis for the novel of the same name, released in 2002 [6] . Excerpts from the novel in 2007 amounted to the novel "Pickled Mongoose". In the same year, based on the plot of Gerrold, the film-drama “Martian Child” (in the Russian box office “Child from Mars” ) was shot, starring John Cusack , Amanda Peet , Joan Cusack and others.
