History of a film studio
The roots of Lenfilm go back to the Military Cinematography Department of the Skobelev Committee , established in March 1914. [4] [5]
There was also a cinema hall, in which the Commune cinema was subsequently opened. In 1915, the Film Department moved to house 8 on Nikolaevskaya Street (now Marata) . It was the first state-owned film factory to film chronicles and feature films that the Skobelevsky Committee released for rent. The military-cinematographic department was headed by Headquarters Captain Yakov Pavlovich Levoshko. One of the first cinematographic departments filmed the documentary "Gymnastics on machines at the Pavlovsk Military School on July 5th day 1913." Young cadets in gymnasts performed sports exercises. [6]
After its nationalization in March 1918, on April 30, the Petrograd Film Committee was established, headed by Dmitry Leshchenko. The Petrograd Cinema Committee of the Northern Communities, created on the basis of the film department of the Skobelev Committee, was initially located in the premises of the People's Commissariat of Education, and then moved to 30 Sergievskaya Street . Here, in the winter garden of Prince Elim Pavlovich Demidov-San Donato mansion, converted into an atelier, was removed the first Soviet film " Seal ", staged by Alexander Panteleev, Nikolai Pashkovsky and Anatoly Dolinov. [6]
In addition to movable and immovable property, the Petrograd Film Committee has become the successor to the equipment and “human resources” of the cinema department. Operators, directors, and technical personnel also switched to work at Kinosev. The film studio of the Skobelevsky Committee, its film laboratory and the rental office in Petrograd, were turned into the production, technical and operational base of the Petrograd Film Committee. [6]
In addition, the Petrograd Film Committee nationalized the Boris Glagolin Pavilion, the Kinodelo studio, as well as the Biofilm film laboratory. Then, in 1918, the Petrograd Film Committee requisitioned 68 city cinemas. And a year later, in 1918, Boltyansky became a member of the College and the head of the entire film production of the Petrograd Film Committee, established on April 30, 1918. [6]
In 1920, the Aquarium and the Aquarium Theater were occupied by the Petrograd Regional Film Department, which later changed its name several times due to political and economic circumstances:
- 1922-1925 - Factory "Sevzapkino" (in the building on 80 Nevsky , in the courtyard of which was the cinema " Parisian ") [7]

The name and brand "Lenfilm" exist since 1934, when the film " Chapaev " was released.
From 1924 to 1926, the Factory of an Eccentric Actor ( FEX ) worked at the Sevzapkino Film Factory - a creative association, theatrical and film workshop. The Youth Workshop was created by Grigory Mikhailovich Kozintsev and Leonid Zakharovich Trauberg in 1921. Here they taught the skill of young actors and staged performances. The school of excellence passed many famous film figures: Sergey Gerasimov , Yanina Zheimo , Oleg Zhakov , Alexei Kapler and others.
Over the entire history of the Lenfilm studio, more than 1,500 feature films have been shot , including Chapaev , William Shakespeare's famous adaptations - Twelfth Night (The First Soviet adaptation of William Shakespeare ) , Hamlet , King Lear and the legendary Cinderella ”,“ Wedding in the Robin ”,“ The Lady with the Dog ”,“ The Beginning ”,“ In Love at His Own Will ”,“ Features of the National Hunt ”.
Lenfilm during the Great Patriotic War
Lenfilm continued to operate even during the years of World War II. In the summer of the 41st, filmmakers worked on military movie compilations. [eight]
On August 27, 1941, it was decided to evacuate Lenfilm in Alma-Ata . The city was not chosen by chance - Leningraders have been collaborating with Kazakh filmmakers for more than a year. The first feature film based on Kazakhstani material was shot in 1928 at the Sovkino film studio based on Dmitry Furmanov ’s novel "Mutiny" (directed by S. A. Timoshenko). In 1938, the first Kazakh feature film called Amangeldy was shot at Lenfilm. [9]
On November 15, 1941, the main employees of Lenfilm were evacuated to Kazakhstan , where, together with their colleagues from Mosfilm , they became part of the CSC - the Central United Film Studio. Despite the merger, films under the legendary Lenfilm brand continued to be released, and Leningrad filmmakers themselves called themselves Lenfilm. The Lenfilm operators conducted documentary filming on the fronts and in besieged Leningrad [10] .
The Central United Film Studio (CSC) worked in Alma-Ata until 1944 and produced 80% of all domestic feature films during the war years. In Alma-Ata, the films “ Air Carrier ”, “ Actress ”, “ Heavenly Slow-Moving ” appeared, which soon entered the studio’s “golden fund”. On January 25, 1944, the Alma-Ata Film Studio was renamed the Alma-Ata Film Studio of feature and documentary films. In 1945, after the re-evacuation of Mosfilm and Lenfilm, the Alma-Ata film studio of feature and documentary films began to work independently.
Lenfilm 2012—2016
On September 11, 2012, an open public discussion of the concepts of development of the Lenfilm film studio took place, organized at the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation , with the participation of the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation , at which two concepts were presented. The film studio development model, voiced by the chairman of the board of directors of Lenfilm Eduard Pichugin and director Sergey Snezhkin , was finally approved [11] .
On October 12, 2012, the Federal Property Management Agency agreed with the proposals of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation regarding the composition of the management of the Lenfilm film studio. The first deputy head of the department, Dmitry Pristanskov, said that Fedor Bondarchuk was approved as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lenfilm Film Studio. The updated composition of the board of directors includes Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Ivan Demidov, adviser to the minister Andrei Aristarkhov, as well as Alexander Sokurov , Sergey Selyanov and Alexei German Jr. Dmitry Pristanskov represents the Federal Property Management Agency on the Board of Directors of Lenfilm Film Studio OJSC. The concept of the development of the film studio, supported at public hearings, involved the modernization of production facilities of the studio [12] . In the same year, Svetlana Karmalita became the editor-in-chief of the film studio [13] .
A few months after the hearing, Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky announced an important decision made by Vladimir Putin : the state will act as the guarantor of the loan, which is necessary for the reconstruction of Lenfilm. Obtaining a loan of 1.5 billion rubles was provided for by the Lenfilm development concept drawn up by Eduard Pichugin and adopted at a public hearing [14] .
In June 2013, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum , VTB Bank signed an agreement with Lenfilm OJSC on opening a credit line in the amount of 1.53 billion rubles for 10 years. The document was signed by Yury Solovyov, First Deputy President and Chairman of the Management Board of VTB Bank, and Eduard Pichugin, Director General of Lenfilm OJSC. [15]
Lenfilm logo
Since 1966, the film studio began to release its films with a new logo - “The Bronze Horseman ”, the inscription “Lenfilm” and diverging projection beams.
In the mid-1950s, newspapers several times announced a competition for the best logo for the Lenfilm film studio. Before that, at the beginning of all the pictures, the caption usually appeared: Film factory, Lenfilm film factory. In the 1960s, the Lenfilm screensaver appeared with the letter “F” in the form of a film.
In the mid-1960s, a competition was announced among cinema professionals in the Kadr newspaper . Many proposals were received : Lenin in an armored car , Peter and Paul Cathedral and many others. As a result of the competition, which was held in three stages, the project of the artist of the Lenfilm film studio Marina Bologovsky won. Together with the combined shooting operator Edgar Shtyrtskober she began to create a screen saver [16] .
First, the sculpture "The Bronze Horseman" by Etienne Falcone was shot by Edgar Shtyrtskober. Shtyrtskober’s task was to find the right angle, and after a long search, he did it. Further, the future logo was processed by Bologovskaya. Then there were no computers - everything was retouched and tinted by hand. Then, already at the multi-station , the method of frame-by-frame shooting, spreading the rays, shot frame by frame and, as a result, a smooth divergence of the spotlights light rays turned out [16]
- Alexander Pozdnyakov, film historian
For the first time, a new screen brand of the studio appeared in the credits of the film “ In the City of S. ” by Joseph Heifitz . In the 1990s, the logo was re-shot. The basis was a smaller sculpture of The Bronze Horseman, which stood in the office of the director of Lenfilm, film director Viktor Sergeyev . An updated logo appeared in the credits of his film " Genius " [16] .
In 2015, the Lenfilm logo and screensaver underwent a small rebranding . The screensaver is made in 3D. For this, the image of the Bronze Horseman was modeled anew by scanning an absolutely accurately reproduced model of the Bronze Horseman provided by the Museum of Urban Sculpture of St. Petersburg [17] . Layout scanning took more than 8 hours. The new Lenfilm screensaver faces the beginning of the films “ Divorce of Own Will ” directed by Ilya Severov and Contribution directed by Sergei Snezhkin .
