Epiglottis (synonym for epiglottis cartilage ; Latin epiglottis ) - elastic cartilage of the larynx . It has the appearance of a thin plate. It is located immediately behind the root of the tongue . It is covered with a mucous membrane .
Functionality
The epiglottis closes the entrance and exit to the larynx during the act of swallowing , thereby preventing food from entering the respiratory tract.
