Gennady Tartakovsky [4] [5] [6] ( born Genndy Tartakovsky ; nee Gennady Borisovich Tartakovsky; January 17, 1970, Moscow , USSR) is an American film director, animator, storyboard artist, producer and screenwriter of Russian origin. Among the well-known directorial works of Tartakovsky are such animated series as Dexter ’s Laboratory , Supercrumbs , Samurai Jack , as well as the Monsters on Vacation trilogy.

Biography

Born into a Jewish family [7] . His father, Boris, worked as a dentist [8] , serving government officials and players of the USSR ice hockey team [9] . Mother, Miriam, worked at school. In addition, he has a brother, Alexander, he is two years older and now works as a computer consultant in Chicago [9] . The Tartakovsky family moved to the United States when he was seven years old [10] . Initially, they settled in Columbus , Ohio [11] , but the family later moved to Chicago .

The child was largely influenced by the comics that he discovered there. The first book he bought was Super Friends from 7-Eleven .

Career

When Craig McCracken became the art director of The Two Silly Dogs , [12] he recommended hiring Robert Renzetti and Tartakovsky. This was a turning point in the career of Tartakovsky. The studio allowed Tartakovsky, McCracken, Renzetti and Paul Radish to work in a trailer in the parking lot in front of the studio, where Tartakovsky created his most famous works.

The series " Laboratory Dexter " was born thanks to the same student work by Tartakovsky at the California Institute of the Arts. Genndi also co-authored and sketched the 25th issue of the Dexter Lab comic book entitled Stubble Trouble. He helped produce the TV series “ Super Baby Girls” and directed many of his series, and was also the director of the animated feature film “Powerpuff Girls”. All of his projects were nominated for an Emmy Award, and Samurai Jack won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour) in 2004. In the same year, Tartakovsky received another Emmy Award for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming One Hour or More) for the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars .

Star Wars creator George Lucas has invited Tartakovsky to direct the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars , which takes place between Star Wars. Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith . " The series received three Emmy Awards: two in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming One Hour or More) category in 2004 and 2005 and one in the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation category (for the work of designer Justin Thompson) in 2005. Tartakovsky did not participate in the creation of the next season of the series (2008) and does not plan to continue work on the Star Wars project [13] .

Gendy was the director of animation for the pilot episode of Korgoth-Barbarian (2006), who did not receive a promotion as a series.

He became the creative president of and became the director of the sequel to The Dark Crystal , which Mile and Peter Spirigi then shot. In February 2012, the production of the film was suspended indefinitely.

Tartakovsky created a series of anti-tobacco advertisements: in 2006 for the Nicorette brand [14] and two in 2008 for the Niquitin brand [15] .

In 2009, the director created the short film " Maruined " for the project channel the Cartoon Network channel, which was not released for hire.

In 2009, it was announced that Tartakovsky would write the script and shoot the full-length film Samurai Jack for Frederator Studios and Bad Robot [16] . In June 2012, Tartakovsky said that he completed the script, but the project was postponed because J.J. Abrams (owner of Bad Robot) began shooting the film " Star Trek " [17] .

In 2010, Tartakovsky created the storyboards for Iron Man 2 for John Favreau [18] .

The latest Tartakovsky project for the Cartoon Network channel, the Titan Symbionic series, was released in 2010-2011. Tartakovsky planned to shoot additional episodes (to the already released 20s), but the series was not continued [19] .

On April 7, 2011, an animated prologue appeared on the Internet that Tartakovsky made for the film “ Shepherd ” [20] .

In early 2011, Tartakovsky began working with Sony Pictures Animation , for which he directed his debut feature film, “ Monsters on Vacation ” (2012). [21] .

After the release of the film “Monsters on Vacation,” Tartakovsky began filming the full-length 3D cartoon “ Popeye ” for Sony Pictures Animation [17] .

In July 2012, Tartakovsky signed a long-term contract with Sony to create his own copyright projects [22] . His first authorial project will be a film entitled “Can You Imagine It?” (“Can You Imagine?”), Produced by Michelle Murdocca. According to available information, this will be a “fantastic journey through the imaginary world of a boy”.

In March 2015, it became known that the project " Popeye ", most likely, will not take place, but the director will continue to work on the cartoon " Monsters on Vacation 2 " for Sony [23] . The cartoon was released on October 22, 2015.

In December 2015, Variety Magazine announced that Tartakovsky was working on a sequel to the Samurai Jack series at Cartoon Network Studios in Los Angeles. According to the magazine, the new series were supposed to appear in the Adult Swim block in 2016 [24] .

In April 2016, Craig McCracken mentioned on his twitter that Tartakovsky no longer works for Sony Pictures Animation [25] . On June 15, 2016, at the Annecy festival, the director showed sketches of some episodes of the new episodes of Samurai Jack, and also announced that 10 episodes would be released in total and that the season would be final [26] . After showing the last season of Samurai Jack, Tartakovsky returned to Sony Pictures and filmed the third installment of Monsters on Vacation. After that, two new projects of the director were announced: a comedy with an R rating called “ Fixed ” and the adventure film “Black Knight” [27] .
