Evalds Valters ( Latvian Ēvalds Valters ; April 2, 1894 - September 26, 1994 ) - Soviet and Latvian theater and film actor, the oldest actor in Latvia. People's Artist of the Latvian SSR (1981). Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Biography

Born in the Egleniyeki farm of the Goldingen Uyezd (now the Kurmal volost of the Kuldig Territory ) in the family of forester Mikel Schoenberg and farmer Anna Valters.

After the death of his father (1897), when the Egleniek changed their owner, the family moved to Goldingen (today's Kuldiga). In addition to Evalds, Anna Valters still has 5 more children in her arms. In the city I went to school and graduated from the required 6 classes.

In his spare time, he worked as a gardener with his uncle. After graduation, he worked at the Vulkan match factory and studied as a hairdresser. In 1912 he moved to Riga , worked during the day, and in the evenings studied French, German and English at the courses “Language Specialist”. He went to work at the Schwab distillery and soon after the outbreak of the war was evacuated.

He spent three months in the refugee committee and volunteered to join the army. He was enrolled in the 5th Zemgale Regiment, commanded by Colonel Joachim Vatsietis . After demobilization ( 1920 ), he studied for two years at the Moscow studio of the film actor "Creativity" with Evgeny Vakhtangov .

A student of the studio starred in the silent film "Guardian Angel." In 1923 he studied acting at the Latvian theater-studio "Skatuve" with Oswald Glazniek . In the same year he returned to Latvia. By personal instruction of Peter Stuchki he handed over his letter to Janis Rainis .

In 1923 - 1928, actor and director of the Liepaja New Theater , taught at the National Institute. He married the actress of his theater Mirdze Kaupin, the daughter of this marriage, Maya Gale lives in England .

In the season 1928 - 1929 he performed on the stage of the Dailes Theater ( Art Theater ). The next season is the actor and director of the Daugavpils Theater , then - the Liepaja Theater . In 1932 he returned to Riga and, together with Theodor Latsis, founded the National Theater, which lasted until 1934 . He married a Liepaja woman Alida Green, two daughters - Laima Nesaule and Mara Walter. He moved to the Liepaja Theater 1934 - 1938 .

As the former shooter, the Ministry of Agriculture allocated a plot of land in Bierini , on the outskirts of Riga ( 1939 ), which cost 500 lats. I bought a yacht from a coffee manufacturer, a German repatriate Taube, called him a Witch ( Ragana ) and sailed on it in Lielupe until the mid-50s.

In 1940 he was arrested for a short time for broadcasting a message regarded as provocative. He became director of the Jelgava Theater ( 1940 - 1941 ), later transferred to the Dailes Theater and remained his actor until the end of his life. In his third marriage, he was married to actress Vera Gribache, the son of Raitis.

Re-arrested for a longer term in 1945. Released with the personal participation in his fate, Eduard Smilgis . Much later, in 1983 , was interrogated by the State Security Committee, but without consequences.

A significant part of his life was devoted to literary work. In honor of the 300th anniversary of Jean Racine , the play Britannic was published, translated by E. Valters ( 1939 ). In 1949 - 1955 he wrote a collection of poems "Rusiada", published in Sweden by the Latvian National Fund. It was published in Latvia in 1990 , reprint 1992 . In 1985 , Liesma Publishing House published La Fontaine 's fables translated by E. Valters.

On October 8, 1988, it opened the Congress of the Popular Front of Latvia , on November 11 of the same year, in a solemn ceremony, raised the Latvian flag on the Tower of the Holy Spirit of Riga Castle . [one]

He died on September 26, 1994, was buried at the Bratsk cemetery in Riga (the main military burial place in the country).

Among the plays: Latvian, Russian, European classics, plays by contemporary (at that time) authors. The first role is in G. Rainis’ performance “The Wilks of the Gears” and the last is the night watchman in the staging of Rutku Tevs’s novel “Servants of the Devil”.

Among the actor’s repertoire was, among others, the role of Lenin in the play by Maurice Rostan “Nicholas II and Lenin” (Production of the Liepaja Theater in 1930 ).

As in the movie, he was a virtuoso performer of small roles, an actor demanding of himself and his colleagues.
