National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA ) is an agency of the US Executive Department - US Department of Transportation . Their mission is to “ Save lives, prevent injuries and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research,” safety standards and enforcement activity ) [1] .

The security program includes:

  • Development, publication and enforcement of the Federal Automotive Safety Standards ( FMVSS ), fuel consumption regulation standards.
  • The development and dissemination of information about vehicles and car equipment through the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).
  • Examination of the situation on the road for possible defects and inconsistencies, and, as appropriate, vehicles and automotive equipment that pose a threat to traffic safety or do not comply with FMVSS.
  • Research security issues and support the development of standards for these issues.
  • Appropriate research and promotion of the development and application of new technologies that can improve road safety and optimize fuel consumption.
  • Collection and analysis of accident data to identify potential safety problems and evaluate the effectiveness of existing software solutions.

Part of the NHTSA's business is to write and promote safety standards, anti-theft, and fuel-efficient cars. NHTSA also licenses car manufacturers and importers, allowing and prohibiting the import of cars and spare parts to be controlled, manages the vehicle identification number system, and the development of anthropomorphic mannequins used in safety tests.
