A carrier (sometimes also a vector) in epidemiology is an organism that does not cause a disease in itself, but is capable of transmitting pathogens of infectious or parasitic diseases . All known carriers are arthropods (insects, ticks).
Carriers are divided into mechanical , in the body of which the causative agent of the disease does not reproduce (for example, flies and, above all, synanthropic flies ) and biological , in the body of which the part of the life cycle of the pathogen ( mosquitoes , mosquitoes ) proceeds. In the latter case, the disease is called vector-borne .
Carrier Examples:
- mosquitoes - carriers of yellow fever , dengue fever , malaria [1] ;
- mosquitoes - pappatachi fever , leishmaniasis [2] , bartonellosis [3] ;
- horseflies - an eye worm ;
- tsetse fly - African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) [4] ;
- bugs - Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) [5] ;
- fleas - plague [6] ;
- ticks - tick - borne encephalitis , tularemia [7] , Lyme disease [8] , Rocky Mountain spotted fever , tsutsugamushi fever , tick-borne relapsing fever [9] , etc. (see Acariases , for a list of tick-borne diseases).
