Cylindropuntia ( lat. Cylindropuntia ) is a genus of cacti common in the deserts of the United States and Mexico .

The local name for these cacti with straight and branching trunks is cholla.
In 1856 , George Engelmann described these cacti as a subgenus of the genus Opuntia . In 1935 , Friedrich Knut raised the status of this group to a separate genus. DNA studies conducted by Stephen Dickey and Robert Volas in 2001 indicate a monophyletic origin of cylindropuntia independent of prickly pear.
