"Rosengarten" (Rose Garden, German Rosengarten zu Worms ) - a medieval German poem ( 1295 ), very popular, with the original figure of the monk Ilzan .
Content: in Worms , in the beautiful rose garden, the Crimhild lives, protected by Siegfried and Burgundians. Dietrich of Bern , with the help of his brother, a monk Ilzan, seizes the Crimhilda. Ilzan spent 20 years in a monastery and turned gray. The abbot lets him go camping. The monks curse Ilzan for the beatings and insults he received from him. Ilzan throws the monastic hood into the grass, wallows on the ground in wild fun and gives out blows to the opposing. It awakens old courage and passion for battle. After the victory, Ilzan kisses Crimhild and rubs her face to the blood with her rough beard. He receives a wreath of roses as a reward, returns to the monastery, beats the monks, demands that they help him repent of his sins, and when the monks refused, Ilzan binds them by beard and hangs everyone on one gallows.
In Germany, for a long time (as far back as the XVII century ), there were stories about the rose garden in Worms. For centuries, Ilzan has been popular. His images are found on engravings of the XV and XVI centuries. Rabelais and Fishart , apparently, took advantage of some stories about Ilzan.
