Volleyball in Azerbaijan - Azerbaijani volleyball has a glorious history that spans more than a dozen years, and beautiful traditions. Even during the Soviet Union, Azerbaijani volleyball players were distinguished by their technicality and high results. From the history of Azerbaijani volleyball
Volleyball appeared in Azerbaijan in 1926 , when the actors of Moscow theaters - the Chamber and the Revolution came to tour in Baku . The first section was organized by N. Arunov among the Baku railway workers. Then the teams of Azerbaijan State University, Gornyak, Dynamo, Kommunalnik, and the trade union of oil workers were created.
The first volleyball courts were equipped in Baku on the territory of the Azerbaijan State. University, in the parks of culture and recreation "Communist" and "Rote Fan."
The 30s
In the thirties of the last century, Azerbaijani volleyball was already known in the USSR. Among the glorious representatives of that generation, volleyball players Beyukkishi Muradov and Ivan Dyachkov should be noted. In 1932, the first Baku championship was held, in which the male and female teams of railway workers won.
The 50s
By the fifties, interest in volleyball in Azerbaijan had grown significantly, which contributed to the emergence of many strong volleyball players in the republic. They were attracted to the USSR national team, as part of which they performed at the World and European Championships. So, the Azerbaijani volleyball player Oktay Agayev, in 1958, became the bronze medalist of the European Championship in men's volleyball, held in Prague.
Shamil Shamkhalov
Coach Shamil Shamkhalov undoubtedly played a big role in the development of women's volleyball in Azerbaijan in the sixties. In 1956, six students of Shamkhalov became champions of the USSR among youth. Three years later, Shamkhalov sends his youthful women's and men's teams to the All-Union Spartakiad of schoolchildren who return from Moscow with champions.
Inna Ryskal and Vera Lantratova
In 1962, 18-year-old Azerbaijani volleyball player Inna Ryskal joined the USSR national team at the World Cup. Having lost only to the Japanese women in the final, the USSR team wins silver medals. Having become one of the main players of the national team, Inna Ryskal performs at the four Olympic Games. By the number of medals won at the Olympic volleyball tournaments, it has no equal in the world. Her achievements are impressive: two - time Olympic champion in 1968 and 1972, two-time silver medalist of the Olympics in 1964 and 1976, world champion in 1970, winner of the 1973 World Cup, three -time European champion in 1963, 1967 and 1971). For great achievements in women's volleyball in 2000 , her surname appeared in the Volleyball Hall of Fame , located in the city of Holyoke ( Massachusetts ), which is considered to be the birthplace of volleyball . She was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .
Together with Inna Ryskal , another pupil of the Azerbaijani volleyball school, Vera Lantratova , also became the Olympic champion in the USSR national team in 1968 . She also became the world champion in 1970 and the champion of Europe in 1967.
60s
At the beginning of the sixties, two representatives of Azerbaijan, Neftyanik and Mehsul, performed in the USSR women's volleyball championship. In 1966, which was marked by bronze medals of the Neftchi football club in the USSR championship, volleyball players of Neftyanik showed a similar result. The debut of “Oilman” in the USSR women's volleyball championship took place in 1950 . In the 1960s and early 1970s, Neftyanik (since 1972 Neftchi) was one of the country's strongest teams. In 1972, the team repeated its success six years ago, having again won the bronze medals of the USSR championship. Neftyanik also won silver medals of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR and the Allied Championship of 1967 in the form of the national team of the Azerbaijan USSR.
The 80s Faig Garayev
In 1980, the Neftchi team was renamed to BZBK by the abbreviation of the Baku factory of household air conditioners. In 1986, Faig Garayev became the head coach of the team, under whose leadership, two years later, in 1988 the BZBK returned to the USSR Premier League, where in 1990 it won bronze medals. And in 1991, the team won the last draw of the USSR Cup .
New story
Since 1991, after gaining state independence, Azerbaijan began to appear in the international arena under its own flag. The first success comes in two years. In 1993, the women's team of the BZBK reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup , where they concede to the German team KUD (Berlin). Under the leadership of Faig Garayev, the Azerbaijani women's team will reach the final of the World Cup, which was held in Brazil and takes 9th place.
In 1994, the Azerbaijani women's team led by F. Garayev took 9-12 places at the World Championships.
In the period from 1997 to 2000, Azerbaijani teams remain out of international competitions. Most volleyball players leave the country, becoming legionnaires. Faig Agayev also leaves for Turkey, where he starts coaching at local clubs.
Recent History
In 2000, at the invitation of the then President of the NOC of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, Faig Garayev returned to his homeland to develop volleyball in the country. Zia Mammadov is elected President of the Volleyball Federation of Azerbaijan . Thus, a new era begins in the history of Azerbaijani volleyball.
Success is not long in coming. First, the women's volleyball club Azerrail wins the European Top Teams Cup . Then the Azerbaijani women's team three times enters the final of the European Championship (2005-Croatia (4th place), 2007-Belgium, 2009-Poland) and also for the second time in its history wins the right to play in the final tournament of the World Cup, which was held in 2006 in Japan.
For two consecutive years, in 2003 and 2004, the women's volleyball team of Azerbaijan became the third prize winner of the international tournament for the Cup of the first president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin.
In 2005, the women's national team of Azerbaijan became the winner of the European qualification tournament of the World Grand Prix, which takes place in the Azerbaijani city of Guba .
