Biography and Creativity

One of the sons of the famous Barcelona jeweler Concordio Gonzalez, his mother was the sister of a Catalan artist. Together with his brother Juan, he worked in his father’s workshop, after his death in 1896 the brothers inherited his father’s business. Their jewelry received Spanish and international prizes. Since 1897, together with his brother, he began to visit the Barcelona Cafe Four Cats , where Picasso , Pablo Gargallo and other artists visited. Julio arrived in Paris in 1900 , entered the international avant-garde circle of the then inhabitants of Montparnasse ( Juan Gris , Max Jacob and others). After 1902, he never returned to his homeland. He was especially close to Picasso, they often worked together.

He first exhibited six works at the 1907 exhibition in the Independent Salon, and in 1909 - in the Autumn Salon. The first solo exhibition was held in 1922 in Paris. Participated in a collective exhibition of cubists in New York ( 1936 ), a collective exhibition of the dada and surrealists there ( 1937 ).

Gonzalez retrospective exhibitions were held at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris ( 1952 ), the Stidelijk Museum in Amsterdam , the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels , Bernese Kunsthall and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (all - 1955 ).

Impact

Influenced the work of Eduardo Chillida , David Smith .
