Biography

The son of the specific prince Dmitry Yuryevich Kholmsky and a descendant of the Tver princely family . Brothers - Mikhail , Vasily and Ivan Kholmsky.

In the 1460s Daniel went to the Moscow service. For the first time, the prince became famous for the brilliant victory of the Moscow troops over the Kazan Tatars near Murom in 1468 , overthrowing the enemy by a sudden sortie from the fortress. Despite this, the raids of the Kazan Tatars on the Russian borders did not stop, and the next year the Moscow forces marched to Kazan . In this campaign, Daniel commanded the vanguard of the Russian troops, defeating the forces of Kazan Khan Ibrahim and forcing him to sign a peace treaty with Ivan III . According to this agreement, the Kazan Khanate was obligated to return all Russian prisoners and establish friendly relations with the Moscow principality .

In 1471, Daniil Kholmsky took part in the campaign of the Moscow troops of Ivan III to Novgorod , commanding the Advanced Regiment . During this campaign, Kholmsky devastated Novgorod land . Kholmsky’s troops defeated the Novgorod troops at Korostyn and Staraya Russa . The city of Russ was burned to prevent the Novgorodians from joining the allied army of the Livonian knights , who were going to help Novgorod. Approaching the Shelon River, Kholmsky on July 14 defeated the Novgorodian army and defeated it . In the Battle of Shelon , about 12 thousand Novgorodians died, 2 thousand were captured.

In the summer of 1472, Kholmsky, at the head of the Moscow rati, came forward to meet the Tatar troops of the khan of the Great Horde Akhmat , who captured and destroyed the town of Aleksin. Khan, however, did not dare to develop success and retreated into the steppe, not wanting to engage in battle with the Moscow army.

In 1473, at the head of the Moscow army, Daniel Kholmsky came to the aid of Pskov , besieged by the Livonian knights . Through bold and skillful actions, Kholmsky managed to persuade the Livonian master to renew peace, obliging them not to enter the Pskov lands and give the Russian merchants a free path. This world will later be called Pskov chroniclers by the name of the outstanding commander - “ Daniliev Mir ”. For this victory, Kholmsky received the title of boyar .

Soon Kholmsky was slandered by the boyars and charged with his intention to flee abroad with his family. Thanks to the support of the clergy and the guarantee of eight noble Moscow nobles who paid 2000 rubles of bail in case of treason, Kholmsky was forgiven by the Grand Duke.

During the second campaign of Ivan III to Novgorod in the autumn of 1477, Daniil Kholmsky, being one of the regiment's advanced regiment and the main leader of this unit, walked along the ice of Lake Ilmen and surrounded and surrounded Novgorod in one night, forcing him to surrender to Ivan III.

Daniil Kholmsky took an active part in the famous “ standing on the Ugra River ” in October-November 1480 , being the de facto leader of the defense of the Russian troops from the forces of Khan Akhmat . Thus, Kholmsky made a great contribution to the final overthrow of the Horde yoke in Russia .

In 1487, Kholmsky took part in the campaign of the Moscow forces in Kazan , commanding a large regiment of “ship rati”. Kazan was besieged and captured on July 9, 1487 . All the merits in this victory belong to Prince Kholmsky. The result of the capture of Kazan was the overthrow of the objectionable Ivan III Khan and the reign of the Moscow protege Muhammad-Emin on the Kazan throne.
