  2. N / A [4] ).

One of the smallest cities in Russia. Since 1996, its population has declined by about 8 times.

Geography

Ostrovnoy is the easternmost city in the region. The city consists of two micro-districts-enclaves, located 2 km from each other, and interconnected by sea and regular intercity bus service.

The first of them (the city of Ostrovnoy and a number of villages) are located on the shores of the Gulf of Svyatonos and the islands located in it ( Witte Island and others) and on the Svyatoy Nos peninsula.

The second - to the east - on the shore of the Lumbovsky Bay and adjacent islands and capes [5] .

History

The official date of foundation of Yokangi (Yokangsky churchyard, one of the 17 Sami settlements on the Kola Peninsula) is considered September 17, 1611 - the date of the first mention of this settlement [6] .

September 17 is annually celebrated as the city’s birthday; in 2011, the village celebrated its 400th anniversary [6] .

The construction of the first naval base began here in 1915 during the First World War (interrupted in 1917). The Chief Naval Headquarters considered that it is easiest to control the Throat of the White Sea and the eastern sector of the Barents Sea from here.

From 1918 to 1920 it was part of the Northern Region . By decree of Miller , a concentration camp was organized at the unfinished naval base.

In 1920, the Yokangsky churchyard was renamed the village of Yokanga.

In 1930, the village became the administrative center of the Sami region .

The Sami district is an administrative-territorial unit within the Leningrad and Murmansk regions of the RSFSR with a center in the village of Ponoi , which existed in 1927-1962 .

In total, 4 s / s were formed: Iokangsky, Lumbovsky, Ponoysky, Sosnovsky.

Iokangovsky and Lumbovsky s / s had the status of Lopar national.

In 1936, the Ponoy district was renamed the Sami district , and its center was moved to the village of Yokang.

In 1938, the village was renamed Gremikha.

On June 22, 1941, the Yokang Naval Base was organized in Gremikha.

In 1963 , after the abolition of the Sami region , Gremikha became part of the North Sea region of the Murmansk region .

In 1981, Gremikha was transformed into the closed city of Ostrovnoy [6] .

Directly the city of Ostrovnoy was built already in Soviet times, 3 km from Gremikha; the symbol “Murmansk-140” was also used as its name.

At present, Gremikha is one of the storage sites for the spent nuclear fuel of submarines of the Northern Fleet and the only place where it is possible to recharge reactors with a liquid metal coolant .

As of 2008, the base was used to a greater extent for the retention of decommissioned submarines.

As of 2014, all SNF of water-cooled reactors was removed, all spent withdrawal parts of reactors with liquid metal coolant were unloaded from submarines. Gremikha is expected to be cleared of nuclear fuel by 2020 [7] .

There was no road or railway connection with Ostrovnoy (although in 1951 - 1953 an attempt was made to build the Kola railway in the city), so you can get there either by the Klavdiya Elanskaya motor ship (14 hours from Murmansk) or by helicopter .

Earlier, the An-2 plane flew into the city, in winter it sat on the ice of the frozen Lake Zmeeozero , and in the summer on a specially prepared dirt strip near the city.
