A collection of Lithuanian folk songs compiled by L. Reza, translated by the Czech poet and scholar F. L. Chelakovsky (1827)

Folklore Activities

Prepared and published a collection of Lithuanian folk poetry “Dainos, oder littauische Volkslieder” (“Dainas, or Lithuanian folk songs”, 1825) with his article “Betrachtung über littauische Volkslieder” (“Considerations about Lithuanian folk songs”), thereby becoming the Lithuanian founder folklore. Under the influence of the aesthetic views of I. G. Herder, I understood folk poetry as an expression of the spiritual culture of the people, a great aesthetic value and, at the same time, a reflection of real life and history. The collection caused a wide resonance. It was republished and translated into English , Italian , German , Polish , Russian , Czech .

He tried to reconstruct the unreserved Lithuanian mythological epic using the motives of Latvian folklore.

Literary activity

He created poetic works mainly in German. However, they reflected the interests and moods of the Lithuanians. Motives of Lithuanian folk songs (Dain) and plots of Lithuanian history are used in the collections of Prutena (Prussia, part I, 1809; part II, 1825) and War Songs ( Kriegsgesänge , 1813). Poetry is classicist , with elements of romantic tendencies.
