Content
History
The history of Cheonan as a city begins on January 1, 1963 - then the settlements of Cheonanip, Cheonangun and Hwasongmyun were united, forming a new administrative unit - Cheonansi (city of Cheonan). Later, the city changed its administrative division and territory several times, the last change occurred in 2003. [one]
Geography
Cheonan is located in the northeastern part of the Chuncheon Namdo province, in the east it borders with the Cheongwon and Chincheon counties , in the west with the city of Asan , in the south with the city of Konju and the county of Yongi and in the north with the cities of Pyeongtaek and Anson . Cheonan is located about 80 kilometers south of Seoul, being the gateway to the central region of South Korea - Sudogwon . It is a major transportation hub.
Topographically, Cheonan is divided into eastern and western parts, between which is Mount Taejosan (424 m). The northern part of the city is predominantly hilly, the eastern part is more mountainous, the Kuksabon and Mangynsan mountains are located here. The Ansongan, Sapgocheon and Kymgan rivers of the Yellow Sea basin flow through the city. [2]

Culture
A number of festivals take place in Cheonan, including: [4]
- Hyntaryon Festival - A cultural festival dedicated to the Korean cultural traditions of hyntaryon (songs and dances).
- Ponghwaje Festival is a historical festival dedicated to the Korean Independence Movement. As part of the festival, a torchlight procession is held throughout the city.
Cultural institutions of the city:
- Korea Independence Memorial - was opened on August 15, 1987 with private donations. Exhibited exhibits related to Korea’s colonial past and independence movement. There is an outdoor exposure. [five]
- Postal Museum - exhibits dedicated to Korea Post are displayed here. The oldest samples date back to 1884, when a regular postal service was launched in the country. The museum was originally built in Seoul, but in February 2004 it moved to Cheonan.
Tourism and Attractions
Historic Sites: [6]
- Buddhist temple of Quandox. Located on Mount Gwandoxan. According to legend, founded by a monk named Chinsan in the VII century . The temple was badly damaged during the war with Japan in 1592, but already in 1597 it was rebuilt. The temple contains a number of state-protected monuments of painting and sculpture.
- A walnut tree in the Gwangdoks Temple - is included in the list of natural monuments of South Korea at number 398. According to legend, a tree was planted in 1290. The modern nut is therefore a descendant of the same tree, and it is more than 400 years old.
- Rock carved Buddha image in Samthari. This image was carved in the early Koryo era, is now one of the largest Buddha images in the country.
- Cheonghyns Buddhist Temple - built in the era of Koryo . It is famous for its five-level pagoda, listed on the treasure list of Korea under the number 354. This pagoda is a representative of earlier architecture ( Baekje State).
- Buddhist temple of Ponsonghyongyeongs. One of the largest in the region, has 200 premises. Here is a stele that is included in the list of National Treasures of Korea at number 7.

- Tree: a weeping willow - this tree appears in urban folklore (the legend of Pak Hyunsu).
- Flower: Forsythia - is a symbol of spring and spring rebirth.
- Bird: dove - is the personification of humility and friendship between people.
