Arto received a musical education from his father Maurice Artaud, a versatile musician who was a solo horn player at the Brussels Opera, as well as a virtuoso violinist, guitarist and vocalist. Relatives of Artaud were also quite famous musicians. His brother Alexander Joseph Artaud was a violinist and composer, and his daughter Desiree Artaud was a singer (mezzo-soprano).
Jean Desiree himself became a soloist in the Brussels Royal Orchestra in 1849, and since 1843 he taught at the Brussels Conservatory . Artaud's composer's legacy includes 24 sketches for horn, as well as several fantasies and quartets for horn and cornet-a-piston .
