In the summer of 2004, three deputies from this Respublika group (Sergei Skrebets, Vladimir Parfenovich and General Valery Frolov) held a hunger strike for many weeks against the refusal of the leadership of the House of Representatives to submit to the Oval Hall amendments they prepared for the election legislation aimed at democratizing it. Many experts consider the subsequent arrest of Skrabets to be “politically motivated,” as the revenge of the authorities for overly active activity during the parliament.
A criminal case was instituted against Skrebets on suspicion of organizing a criminal group. He was detained in May 2005 . In relation to the former deputy, the prosecutor's office opened a criminal case under two articles of the Criminal Code: Art. 13 h. 1 (preparation for a crime) and Art. 431 h. 2 (preparation for giving a bribe). On September 13, 2005, the ex-deputy was charged again with illegal participation in entrepreneurial activity. In protest of the allegations, Skrebets held four hunger strikes, one of which lasted 40 days. All charges almost fell apart as a result of court hearings.
In December 2005, the CEC registered an initiative group to collect signatures for the nomination of presidential candidate Sergei Skrabets. She was led by the brother of the politician Alexander Skrabets. At that time, Skrebets himself was in the pre-trial detention center of the Minsk City Executive Committee No. 1. At the end of January 2006, he withdrew in favor of another applicant - ex-rector of Belarusian State University Alexander Kozulin .
On February 14, 2006, Sergei Skrebets was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. An amnesty was applied to Sergei Skrebets, in connection with which the sentence was reduced by one year. He was released on November 15, 2006 after a year and a half of imprisonment. During the conclusion, Sergei Skrebets lost 30 kilograms of weight.
