Edoma (edomnaya elevation) is a positive landform of the Arctic and subarctic plains of Eastern Siberia , representing elevations surrounded by river valleys or lake basins.
It covers an area of more than a million km² in northeastern Siberia . This type of permafrost is rich in organic matter (2% carbon), consists of loess with ice (50-90% of ice by volume). It is considered a source of greenhouse gases. The total amount of greenhouse gases (mainly methane ) contained in edom is estimated at 500 Gt in terms of carbon , which is 100 times more than the annual emission of carbon released into the atmosphere when burning fossil fuels. The current yield of methane released during the melting of the edoms is estimated at 4 Mt / year.
