Creativity
- Albanian Henri Sala is one of the most interesting video artists of his generation. He attracted international attention in 1999 thanks to his participation in the exhibition “After the Wall” ( Stockholm ), dedicated to the art of post-communist Europe, and Manifesto 3 ( Ljubljana ). A video installation of Intervista-Finding the Words (1998) was shown at an exhibition in Stockholm, and a short film Nocturnes was shown at the Manifesto. The works of Henri Sala are meditative, characterized by an almost complete absence of camera movement, attention to seemingly insignificant details.
- In such videos as Mixed Behavior (2003), Now I See (2004) and Long Sorrow (2005), where a DJ plays on the roof of a house in New York on New Year's Eve, Icelandic rock band Tranbant performs on stage and a jazz saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc is improvising in a suburb of Berlin , Sala continues to study the connection between sound and space .
- For the Air Cushioned Ride, the starting point is the experience that Sala experienced while traveling in Arizona while listening to Baroque chamber music in a car. As he approached a group of parked trucks, the sounds of a country station with country music began to interfere with the music he was listening to. Video Air Cushioned Ride - parked trucks under a bright blue sky. As the camera mounted in the car is moving along the trucks, the music in the car switches between country and classical music. The companion Air Cushioned Ride piece, A Spurious Emission , was created by translating the Air Cushioned Ride soundtrack into a piece of music performed by an orchestra of baroque and country musicians. The soundtrack functions as a collage of two musical genres.
- The same interest in the confrontation of different temporal characters can be found in the two-channel silent video After Three Minutes (2007). The work includes a video that Sala created in 2004 - Three Minutes (a three-minute close-up of cymbals in the light of a strobe). Three Minutes (2004) plays on the differences between different rhythms: cymbals and strobe. For After Three Minutes, Sala re-shoots the video using a security camera at two frames per second. Two videos are shown side by side, making the temporal component of the work more complex.
- Long Sorrow - the camera slowly approaches the object, visible in the window of an empty apartment, to jazz music. As the camera approaches, it turns out that the object is a person playing this music, sitting outside the window.
- Time After Time (2003) uses the idea of breaking ties, showing a lone exhausted horse on the highway. Appearing as a ghost throughout the film - the horse is now in focus, then out of focus, it raises its hind leg when the car passes by. There is no idea of the reason for the horse being there, only speculation.
- Answer Me - a short film invites viewers to look into the conversation of alleged lovers when the question of one drowned in a drum beat of another, or, perhaps, a drum beat was the answer.
- Title Suspended - a sculpture of two slowly rotating gloved hands. Each turn has an upward and downward phase, when the sculpture acquires and loses its shape.
