Biography
John Harvard was born and grew up in London , was the fourth of nine children of Robert Harvard ( 1562 - 1625 ), a butcher and owner of his own shop, and Katrina Rogers (1584-1635), a native of Stratford . Educated at the school where the director was his father.
In 1625, his father, sister, and two brothers died from the plague . After a while, John's mother married John Ellitson ( 1580 - 1626 ), who died several months later. In 1627, Katrina became engaged again with Richard Yerwood ( 1580 - 1632 ). In the meantime, John entered Emmanuel College at Cambridge and in 1632 received the status of Bachelor of Arts . In 1635, Katrina died, and in 1637, John Harvard's grandfather, Thomas. In April 1636, Harvard marries Ann Sedler ( 1614 - 1655 )
In 1637 they emigrated to New England and settled in Boston , where John Harvard became a priest . But after a while he falls ill with tuberculosis and dies in 1638 .
Harvard childless bequeathed 779 pounds (half of his fortune), as well as about 400 books from his library to a new college founded in 1636 . In gratitude for the donation, in 1639 the school was renamed Harvard College.
Sculpture of the Three Wrongs
The monument in the courtyard of Harvard University is called the “Sculpture of Three Wrongs”, which guides tell visitors to the university:
John Harvard was never the founder of the university, but only one in the line of his philanthropists. The college, which grew into a university, was founded from the gifts of John Harvard in 1636, and not in 1638, as the inscription informs.
Not a single convincing portrait of John Harvard has been preserved either in Britain or in the United States. The face on the monument is a fictional and idealized image that John (a tuberculosis patient) never had.
