Yuriy Aleksandrovich Polkanov (born March 10, 1935 , Simferopol ) - Soviet and Ukrainian geologist and mineralogist , doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences, academician of the Academy of Technological Sciences of Ukraine (1993) [1] , chief research fellow of the Ukrainian State Institute of Mineral Resources in Simferopol, famous Karaite scholar , head of the research center of the Association of Crimean Karaites . Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.

Biography

Born March 10, 1935 in Simferopol in a Russian - Karaite family. Father - Alexander Ivanovich Polkanov (1884-1971), Crimean local historian and historian. Mother - Anna Ilyinichna Kalfa (1904-1960). He graduated from school number 14 in Simferopol in 1952 . In 1957 he graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute .

Scientific activity

Geology

Mining engineer-geologist, researcher in the field of prospecting and technological mineralogy, a leading researcher at the Crimean branch of the State Geological Exploration Institute. He conducted work in the Urals , in Kazakhstan , Siberia , and Ukraine .

The main direction of scientific activity: the study of non-traditional small diamonds (cosmogenic, metamorphogenic, etc.); development of diagnostic methods, enrichment technology for sorting small natural diamonds. Main scientific achievements: participation in the discovery and evaluation of deposits of titanium and titanium-zirconium ores; identification of new types of rough diamonds.

One of the authors of the forecast and the discoverers of a unique underground hydraulic system under the Chufut-Kale fortress (near Bakhchisarai ).

Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, Full Member of the Academy of Technological Sciences of Ukraine (1993) [1] . Author of over 250 scientific publications and 12 inventions.

Member of the Ukrainian Institute of Speleology and Karstology, member of the editorial board of the journal "Speleology and Karstology" [2] .

In honor of Yu. A. Polkanov, the mineral polkanovit was named [3] [4] [5] .

Karaite Studies

Yuri Alexandrovich Polkanov is a well-known karaimoved and activist of the movement for the revival of the ancient Turkic [6] historical and cultural heritage of the Crimean Karaites . Since 1989, he was repeatedly elected a member of the Presidium of the All-Ukrainian Association of Crimean Karaites and the Crimean Association “ Krymkarailar ”, for 16 years he has been the permanent leader of the Scientific Council of the Association, actively contributed to the establishment and development of the national-cultural movement, participated in the organization of ethnocultural expositions and restoration work in the Chufut-Kale Kenasas , author of the opening of an underground hydraulic structure near the fortress city of Chufut-Kale, organizer and participant of international youth labor camps and Chufut-Kale.

He participated in the development and adoption of the state program “Measures for state support for the preservation of the cultural heritage of Crimean Karaites and Krymchaks for the period until 2005”, the second national congress of Crimean Karaites, at which he was unanimously elected a member of the Supreme Council of Crimean Karaites in Ukraine. He is an active participant in international conferences and symposia on Karaite studies ( Russia , France , Lithuania , Austria , Cyprus , etc.).

Author of works in the field of ethnic culture of Crimean Karaites (about 50 publications), compiler of a collection of Crimean Karaite legends . His point of view on the past of Crimean Karaites is often given in the Russian and Ukrainian media and scientific works of other authors.

As the head of the Scientific Council of the Crimean Association “ Krymkaraylar ”, Yu. A. Polkanov is a key figure in the formation of the historical consciousness of Crimean Karaites.

Awards and titles

  • Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (1996);
  • Honorary Scout of the bowels of Ukraine (2005);
  • Honored Worker of Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (2005) [7] ;
  • Laureate of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Prize in the field of science and scientific and technical activity for the series of works “Rites and Customs of Crimean Karaites-Türks”, “Proverbs and Sayings of Crimean Karaites”, “Legends and Traditions of Karaites” (1995) [8] ;
  • Prize winner Casasa (1997);
  • title "Person of 1997" for achievements in science (American Biographical Center).

Yu. A. Polkanov entered the list of “500 outstanding scientists of the XX century in the field of geology”, is presented in the international directory “Who is who in the diamond world”. He is also awarded:

  • 8 medals of the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR (1970-1990);
  • the sign and diploma of the discoverer of the field of industrial diamonds (1990);
  • for the introduction of an invention created after August 20, 1973, the badge “Inventor of the USSR” (1974) was awarded;
  • a medal to them. Luchitsky (2000).

Family

Father - Alexander Ivanovich Polkanov (1884-1971), a lawyer by training, was born in Crimea in the family of the Orthodox priest John Polkanov, who served in the Pokrov church in Sudak since 1891 [9] . After the revolution, Alexander Ivanovich held a number of posts in the field of protection of monuments of art, antiquities and national life, was one of the organizers of the Russian Society for the Study of Crimea. During the years of German occupation, being the director of the Crimean Museum of Local Lore, he hid and kept many museum valuables in hiding places. In those same years, he was actively engaged in the activity of saving Karaites from physical destruction, having published a number of works emphasizing their Turkic origin (1943). After the war, he was repressed as a "collaborator . " Rehabilitated in 1956, but his work was banned for publication until 1989.

Mother - Anna Ilyinichna Kalfa (1904, Kharkov - 1960, Simferopol), karaite [10] .

Married, has 4 children, 6 grandchildren.

  • son - Dmitry Yuryevich Polkanov (born 1969), Honored Worker of Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea [11] , chairman of the Simferopol Karaite religious community "Cholpan" [12] [13] , deputy chairman of the NGO Regional Cultural Autonomy of the Crimean Karaites of the Republic of Crimea [ 14] , head of the operation department of Municipal Unitary Enterprise “Central Zhilservice” [15] . On August 17, 2015, in Yalta, he spoke on behalf of the Crimean Karaites at a meeting of the President of the Russian Federation V. V. Putin with representatives of national public associations of the Republic of Crimea [16] .
  • daughter - Anna Yuryevna Polkanova (born 1969), Honored Worker of Culture of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea [17] , Deputy Director General for Scientific Research of the State Budgetary Institution of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Bakhchisaray Historical, Cultural and Archaeological Museum-Reserve” [18] , laureate of the Crimean Award in the nomination “ Contribution to the peacekeeping activities, development and prosperity of Crimea ” [19] , author of many publications on Karaite issues.
