Creativity

  • From early portraits to the most recent episode with enlarged images downloaded from the Internet , Ruff explores the limits of photography. As a continuation of its Nudes and Substrate series, the latest jpeg series uses familiar images from the Internet to study the transformation and degeneration of images that have undergone electronic distribution. His monumental prints of poor-quality images with visible pixels create an almost impressionistic effect. Ruff explores the processes associated with the digitalization of images and its influence on photography and collective memory .
  • During his studies, Ruff developed his conceptual serial photography method . Its first major theme was the interiors of German living quarters, with typical features from the 1950s to the 1970s ( Interior 12B, 1980 ). This was followed by similar series with views of buildings ( Haus Nr. 8 III, 1988 ) and portraits of friends and acquaintances made in the spirit of passport shots, (for example, portrait (R. Huber) , 1988).
  • These series were followed in 1989 by a series with images of the night sky, which was no longer based on photographs of Ruff himself ( Stern 17h 51m / -22 , 1990).
  • From 1992 to 1995, Ruff took night shots with a night-vision device that looked like military or spyware ( Nacht 14 I , 1993 ).
  • In 1994 - 1996 , the Stereoscopy series was created.
  • The following series in the 1990s were based on photographs from newspapers. Ruff used pictures of others in the same vein as in the series with the night sky.
  • In 2003, Ruff published the Nudes series with the text of the French author Michel Huelbeck . Images were based on pornography from the Internet.
  • In 2008, Thomas Ruff temporarily put off his favorite medium, a photograph, to experiment with drawings on canvas. The new zycles series ( 2008 ) consists of large works depicting lines floating on the surface in an elegant dance of geometric shapes. Ruff uses three-dimensional modeling software to translate mathematical cycles into impressive structures. Although far from Ruff's previous works, these images reflect the artist’s interest in reproduction techniques.
