History

The London Eye at night

Westminster’s history goes back to the Norman conquest of England . In the middle of the 11th century, King Edward the Confessor began the construction of Westminster Abbey . Between the abbey and the river, he built the Palace of Westminster , the future residence of the English kings. This construction has become a symbol of the transfer of wealth and power from the City of London - the ancient center of London - to Westminster. [3]

For many centuries Westminster was separated from the City of London. This continued until the sixteenth century, when the growing city moved to the fields surrounding it, joining villages such as Marylebone and Kensington . At that time, modern Greater London began to be created.

Modern Westminster was formed in 1965 when three metropolitan areas merged: Marylebone , Paddington and the smaller Westminster , which included Soho , Mayfair , James , Strand , Westminster , Pimlico , Belgravia and Hyde Park [4] . The connection occurred under the London Administration Act 1963 . According to this act, the number of districts was significantly reduced and local authorities managed large areas, both in geography and population. After these changes, the borders of Westminster, like other boroughs in London, remained virtually unchanged.
