Format
The tournament has an unusual format, as the football clubs of Liechtenstein , and there are only seven of them, participate in the competition with two, three, or even four (in 2004) rosters. The participation of the main team is mandatory under the rules of the competition. Competitions are held according to the autumn-spring system: matches up to the quarter finals inclusive are played in the fall, and 1/2 and the final are held in the spring.
Until 1965, inclusive, the competition was held according to the "spring-autumn" system , from the 1965/66 season - "autumn-spring"
Depending on the performance in the cup, the seeding of the teams for the next tournament draw is determined: the semifinalists of the previous draw start from the 1/4 finals, the remaining teams start from 1/16 or 1/8 finals, depending on which division of the Swiss championship they are playing in.
Six times, in the seasons 1961-1963 and 1966 / 67-1968 / 69, a match was also held for 3rd place on the same day and in the same stadium as the final.
All rounds of the tournament consist of one game. If the main time of the match ends in a draw, then an additional time is assigned - 2 halves of 15 minutes each. If no winner is identified by the end of extra time, a penalty shoot-out is awarded.
Since 1999, all finals have been held at the Rainpark Stadium in Vaduz . In 2015 and 2017, the final was held at the Sportpark in Eschen .
The winning team receives 25 commemorative gold medals, the losing team receives 25 commemorative silver medals. The head judge and his assistants also receive commemorative gold medals.
The team that won the trophy 3 times gets it for eternal possession. [one]
Liechtenstein Football Champions
Since joining the Swiss Football Union in 1932, the Liechtenstein clubs Balzers and Triesen have also become members of the football federation of the canton of St. Gallen .
In 1933, Vaduz joined them, having played one year before in the regional league of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg , and all 3 clubs (the other 4 princedom clubs were founded after the Second World War ) were combined into one regional group in the 4th league. The representative of the principality, who took the highest place, was declared the champion of Liechtenstein.
In the 1937 season, only one participant from the Principality participated in the competitions under the auspices of the St. Gallen Football Federation - Triesen, who was declared the champion of Liechtenstein without games with other teams of the principality.
- 1934 Triesen
- 1935 Triesen
- 1936 Vaduz
- 1937 Triesen
In the future, the principality's clubs did not play in one regional group, and the champions of Liechtenstein were not proclaimed, and after the Second World War the teams began to compete among themselves in the cup tournament.

Cup Finals
Three times in a row in the seasons 1963-1965 the Vaduz main team was forbidden to participate in the cup, as the team played in the Swiss Championship two divisions higher than all other Liechtenstein teams. Instead of the main team in the seasons of 1963 and 1964, the team of veterans (over 30 years old) “Vaduz Seniors” performed.
In the 1969/70 season, the main team did not participate in the Cup.
