Populism as a term in journalism
Populism is based on the desire of one or another political force to gain the trust and support of the masses and to please the people. At the same time, the real goals of populist politicians (the struggle for power, enrichment, etc.), as a rule, are covered by socially attractive ideas.
Populists base their rhetoric on emphasizing the economic and social interests of ordinary people. Since the 1980s , many scholars of populism have viewed it as a rhetorical style that can serve not just one, but many ideologies . Depending on the ideology supported, they distinguish between “left” and “right” populism.
Many populists present themselves as defenders of certain regions or of individual social groups, such as, for example, workers, women, urban dwellers, rural residents, workers in a certain industry and so on. In rhetoric, populists often use dichotomy (the “either-or” principle, that is, “no third is given”) and claim to express the interests of the majority of the population.
“ Great Britain is perhaps the European state where populism has had the most devastating effect on traditional parties. He gave Jeremy Corbin’s Laborism a Euro-skeptic and extreme leftist bias , while the Tories also embarked on a path of internal decay - starting with a suicidal decision to give binding force to a referendum that did not have it and whose conduct itself was a manifestation of political irresponsibility ”
