History
In the off-season of 2000, a revolution took place in basketball Europe, the rich clubs of the continent decided to create an alternative league of the strongest teams in Europe ( ULEB Euroleague). That year, the RBF refused to participate in all tournaments under the auspices of ULEB and supported FIBA . But Russia was not left without representation in the new tournament, the Italian businessman Luciano Kapikkioni on the basis of the team of the first league "Pulkovo" [1] created the team "St. Petersburg Lions ”(“ St. Petersburg Lions ”). The club was created exclusively for participation in the prestigious European tournament ULEB Euroleague.
The composition of the “Lviv” picked up pretty good - Kate Jennings ( USA ), Stefan Stazic ( Austria ), Boyan Brkic ( Bosnia and Herzegovina ), Derrick Hamilton (USA), Marco Verginella ( Slovenia ), Dzhevad Alikhojic (Bosnia), Maryan Kralevich (Slovenia) ) and four Russians - defender Sergei Bazarevich , forwards Andrei Maltsev , Evgeni Kisurin and Evgeni Korshunov . The team was led by a Yugoslav specialist Miodrag Veskovich , and the general manager of the club was St. Petersburg Yuri Pavlov , the 1974 world champion.
The group in which “Lions” was to play was quite strong, which predetermined a sad final result. Having gained only two victories in 10 matches, the Lions ceased to exist, since Kapikkioni signed a contract with ULEB for a year. And then ULEB agreed with FIBA.
