Sasha Distele ( Fr. Sacha Distel ; January 29, 1933 , Paris - July 22, 2004 , Reol-Canadel-sur-Mer near Saint-Tropez ) - French singer, composer and actor. Nephew Ray Ventura , composer and leader of the jazz orchestra.

Biography

Born in a Jewish family. His father, a chemical engineer Ioina Leo Distel (1894–1970), was a native of Odessa [6] [7] ; mother - Andrey Ventura (1902, Constantinople - 1965, Paris) - was a Sephardic pianist and sister of conductor Ray Ventura . During the German occupation of Paris, the mother was arrested and deported to a concentration camp, his father was hiding under false documents, and Sasha was given up for foster care to a Catholic family. After the liberation of the city, he was reunited with his parents.

After graduating from music school, guitar, began to play in clubs, and soon he was known as one of the most professional jazz guitarists in Paris. In the mid-50s he went to study in the UK, then to the USA. Returning to France, he performed with the Martial Solal Trio , recorded with pianist Raymond le Seneschal and Modern Jazz Quartet . In the late 50s Distel recorded the first single - Scoubidou , followed by Personalité , Mon beau chapeau , La belle vie , Accroche un ruban , etc.

In the late 60s, Sasha Distel hosted the popular TV show Sacha Show . It was at this time that he met Petula Clark and her husband Claude Wolf, who advised Distel to try himself internationally.

In 1970, Distel recorded a cover version of the famous song Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head (in the French version Toute la pluie tombe sur moi ), and this single outpaced the original BJ Thomas in the number of copies sold, taking high positions in the British charts. The album released after the single was successfully sold in the USA and the UK.

Distel starred in movies and became famous for his novels with famous actresses and singers, including Brigitte Bardot and Juliette Greco . Owning, in addition to French, Italian, Spanish, English and German, he conducted radio and television programs in many countries in different languages, wrote songs for other artists, including Frank Sinatra , Tony Bennett , Ray Charles .

April 28, 1985 got into a serious car accident while driving a Porsche car, in which actress Chantal Nobel was also driving. Nobel received serious injuries and was forced to take a break in her career due to long treatment. Distel himself was slightly injured and was later sentenced to a year in prison for “causing harm to health through negligence”.

In 1997, Distel became a holder of the Legion of Honor for his contribution to French music.

Sasha Distel died of cancer on July 22, 2004 .
