Strait of Frieza ( Japanese択 捉 水道, Etorofu suido: Strait of Etorofu) - a strait in the Pacific Ocean that separates the island of Urup from the island of Iturup . Connects the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean . One of the largest straits of the Kuril ridge .

The length is about 30 km. The minimum width is 40 km. The maximum depth is over 1300 m. The coast is steep, rocky [1] [2] .
The salinity of the water in the strait is from 33.0 to 34.3 ppm . The cross-sectional area of the strait is 17.85 km² (9.2% of the total cross-sectional area of the straits of the Kuril chain) [3] .
A threshold with a depth of about 500 m is distinguished in the strait. Baydarochnaya Bay and Shchukina Bay are located in the northern part [1] . Water of one of the highest waterfalls in Russia, Ilya Muromets, falls into the strait [2] .
The average tide along the banks of the strait is 1.0 m [2] . The strait does not freeze in the cold season, but from February to March it is filled with floating ice [4] .
The strait is named after the Dutch navigator Maarten Gerritsen De Vries , the first European to explore the strait in 1643. [five]
From 1855 to 1875, the state border between Russia and Japan passed along the strait.
The banks of the strait are not populated. The strait is located in the water area of the Sakhalin region .
